Quarter ribs, pt. III

I broke down and bought a CNC mill. It's been about 12yrs since I've ran CNC anything, so I've been brushing up for the past couple of months getting ready. The machine was delivered Friday, and started making chips Monday afternoon.

I made a template program so all I have to do is make a few edits for use. These first couple took a little longer to make, modifying the program to get everything worked out. Should be smooth sailing from here. 1/2" dovetail ribs to follow.

I 3d scan the barrel to match the contour, no hand fitting needed. Just clean up some tooling marks, deburr, and it's ready for finish. Should've made the jump years ago.

How long did it take to manually machine one of these, And how long does it take to CNC machine one?

Now you're in business, You couldn't charge what it actually took you to make one by hand I'm sure.

Start to finish from casting the barrel to having them ready to finish is about a full day manually.
Start to finish from scanning, programming, to ready to finish on the CNC is 2.5 hrs.

That's pretty neat. Being able to scan the profile is a real game changer.
It's huge. I'm using the scanner for making parts with more complex geometries too.

Gotta pay for the CNC machine, and time to learn how to use it.
That is a factor for sure.

Very cool! Can you tell me a little about the scanner? Appears maybe you are using Fusion 360 as your CAD/CAM?
The scanner is a Creality Raptor. I'm using Fusion. The scans are imported as a mesh, so it does take some work to get the relevant geometry into a usable state. It's not horrible once you get it figured out but it's a learning curve.

What sort of mill did you get?
I service CNC's for my day job, so I love all the gorey details.
Nothing impressive, it's a Tormach 1100mx. I'm in a home shop that's already tight on space. Power requirements were also a factor.

I have parts headed out to Paul at this time, CCM. He does great quality work at a good price.
Thanks Butch. I do get accused of being too expensive fairly regularly.

This is Great! to see. I got all of my stuff for customs on 98 Mausers from a shop back East almost twenty years ago.

I have a question for you. I have a 98 with the claw style scope mounts. Can you make plates (is that the word?) to fill in those areas?

thanks,

Rich
