Q re Digital zoom on Thermal Scopes.

Guys this is probably not a hard question i just need it explained once so i'll understand. I do know what Digital zoom is on thermals but what im trying to understand is how to COMPARE it to a different scope that doesn't have the same BASE magnification from the start...

I have a Nvision Halo XRF which has a base magnification of 3.5x then it says digital zoom of 1x/2x/4x/8x.

Im fixing to order a Nvision Nox 18mm for primary helmet mount monocular,,,,, however this unit is weapons mountable.
It has a base mag of 1x then digital zoom of 1x/2x/4x/8x.

Here is the question....

When we spot/stalk hogs we usually get around 50-75yds from them before we start shooting. With the XRF and base mag of 3.5 we alway bump it up one notch to the second zoom level of 2x. Its perfect there for running shots. If i was on 3.5x base and i go to the 2x, WHAT ACTUAL POWER AM I ON NOW?????

Reason why i want to know is I want to use this Nox 18 has a weapons mount SOMETIMES but know for it to be able to be used effectively i need to be around that 2x zoom on the XRF so hogs don't look like rats out there... So with the Nox 18mm starting at 1x.... What level of zoom am i going to be on to equate the 3.5x XRF at its 2x zoom stage.... Will i be on 2x 4x or 8x?????

Well, I'm assuming Nvision works the same as Pulsar. Base mag is the lowest mag that you have. So base mag x1 is equal to base mag. Then base mag x whichever multiplier you choose is the product of that. On the Halo 3.5x2 is 7x, so you would need 1x7 zoom on the Nox to equal the Halo. I suspect the pixels would be very big and the pic will be distorted at 7x zoom.

Shooting hogs at 7x at close range is a lot of mag for me. I do much better at half that. I prefer a wider Fov as things get hectic in a hurry.

That makes total sense to me now. And yes you're right lower is better, we rarely go past 7x on the Halo unless we're way out there shooting a single. However the image on the 640 nvision is so clear already you have to go to the last mag setting before it gets what you're calling distorted. its still a nice picture on the 2 and 4x zoom levels....

If im understanding that right then to get to 3.5 base mag on the Nox 18mm i'll be at the 4x setting which is the second click on the button and i'll be happy with that.

We do have some lower end units in the 2-4k price range and yeah much past base mag and its super grainy.

Ok thanks for the clarification sir!!

Second click is 4 power and 3rd click is 8 power. So to try to equal the Halo your going to have to put the nox18 on 8 power

If I was planning on using the 18 occasionally for use on a gun, I'd consider jumping up to the Nox 35 instead with it's 2.5X base mag.
