Putting on your own barrel.

Hello,

I was wondering, what do I need to put on my own barrel? Is it even possbile ( Ofcourse it is but really accurate ) or is the only option a gunsmith?

I have alot of materials at home ( C&C if needed )

Regards,

It depends on the equipment you have, the barrel and what gun it's going on.

A prefinished barrel for a Savage = way easy.

You need a vice with block to hold the action and a wrench for the barrel nut

A short chambered barrel for a Rem 700 = not too bad and can be done without a lathe.

You need a vice with a block to hold the barrel and an action wrench. You can get tools to hand turn a chamber reamer to cut until the HS is correct.

If you have a lathe = go to town, it's not rocket science

Just obtained an original copy of the first Gunsmith Kinks that Brownells prints and sells. In it are the instructions for lathe set up and techniques to thread, chamber and fit a rife barrel. Some one is advertising a CD with step by step instructions as well. Don't remember who but a google search should turn up something.
Personally I have installed several Brownells pre-fit/short chambered barrels and have been happy with them. Good accuracy for me.

American Gunsmithing Institute has instruction DVD's for barrel installation, and I think Darrel Holland does too.

Good luck, Tom
