Putting a Muzzle Brake on my 308?

So after shooting my 308 at the range, I decided I want to put a break on it. The rifle is a Savage 110FP and has a heavy tapered barrel on it, real good shooter. My only complaint is the rifle jumps out of the rest it has so much muzzle blast. I want to try and tame it down and get it more accurate.

So, what is the best style to keep the muzzle down and tame? Shark fin like on a 50 or cylindrical? Where can I order one or have it done for an affordable price?

A muzzle brake might reduce felt recoil, but it will definitely increase muzzle blast and make enemies of any shooters who are unfortunate enough to be at the benches to either side of you.

Well, I'm not a bench shooter of any fashion. I am fortunate enough to have my own makeshift "range" at a farm so that is not a concern.

My major hope is that I will reduce muzzle jump more then anything. The recoil factor is not an issue for me, I hunt with a 45-70 and 375 H&H...big boy toys. I want to keep this rifle accurate as all get out, and I think it might help.

Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Thanks,

F-C

Muzzle brakes aren't THAT bad. At a 600 or 1000 yard NBRSA match you will find that most rifles are equipped with brakes and we are all still friends. Sure, there are some brakes that divert the gasses to the rear but not many shooters use them.,They are not legal in NBRSA competition BTW.)

Ray,
I just can't stand shooting next to 'em, whether they're legal or not :)

That's just my opinion, but I'm quite sure that it's shared by plenty of other shooters out there. They absolutely have their place on some of the harder kicking rifles without a doubt, but I'd prefer not to be situated close to a shooter using one at a match.

I purchased a OPS inc. brake on my 300 win mag and was amazed. The gunsmith did a horrible job and managed to put it on upside down - it has side ports - the effect was incredible. I had a problem with muzzle jump and it is almost gone.
I shot next to a friend a couple of weeks ago and he said it was no louder than his 7 mag without a brake. I had one of the quite brakes and another one with holes drilled in it on a 22-250. Evertime I shot it I needed ear plugs and muffs. They were both horribly loud.
I would bet that the 308 you will be able to see impact at a low magnification level.
The OPS people make the brakes for SEAL's and other special forces so it is not some guy drilling holes in chunk of steel. I puchased mine from Brownells.
Good luck and post if you get a brake and what kind.

Money for money the Harrells brakes are as good as any of them are, and you sure can't beat the price.......
$30 bucks shipped against some of those $100 jobs......
Whats not to like 'O)
They are all I install anymore, and so far no complaints about what they do...
