PUMPKIN NECK TURNER

Which would you choose for a neck turner-the Sinclair 4000 or the Pumpkin?
Will the Sinclair carbide mandrel work with the pumpkin neck turner.

I have both. Both work great. I use the Pumpkin mandrel with the Pumpkin and the Sinclair with the Sinclair. The Pumpkin is tight, but the turning mandrel is carbide and I take extra care with the neck turning lube.

If I had to have only one and the funds to buy either, I'd take the Pumpkin. it's a tad easier to make really fine adjustments.

As an aside, use some 0000/Neverdull on the inside and outside of the neck after you turn. Especially when you are measuring to see where you are/how good you're doing.

I never had a Sinclair but owned a 21st Century and a Time Precision before I bought the Pumpkin, wish I would have just bought the Pumpkin in the 1st place.

buy a Pumpkin and be happy. If you want to change the size by a "tenth you can change the size by a "tenth" first time every time. Don makes a great tool.

Punkin hands down. I have both and use the Punkin on my PPC cases and the Sinclair on my .308 custom.

The pumpkin sounds great. Where can you get them. I assume they are not cheap. What would be the cost of setting up a 6mm turner with the carbide mandrel and expander (the whole kit) be?

IIRC around $310 + shipping. FWIW a replacement cutter runs $60. It may be the best out there, but matches are won with less expensive neck turners. There is a learning curve with all of them. At that price I would seriously consider pre-turned brass by Ron Hoehn, or others that advertise on this forum.

I've used them all, and weeded them out to narrow it down to 3. Pumpkin, 21st Century and PMA. Sold the 21st Century, but continue to use the PMA and Pumpkin. Both are equally great ;)

dbaird,
Kelblys is your best bet price wise, Just make sure you get the neck expander mandrel that matches the carbide neck turning mandrel. Kelblys will have those also. I think the expander mandrel is .001 smaller.

I use PMA neck turner great tool for the money. Does a great job. Yes learning curve with all turners. Plus you can call at PMA and they will talk you through and help you. That means a lot . Good people.
