Sinclair Premium Neck Turner information needed

I am familiar with the Forrester and the Stiller Pumpkin. I used the K&M neck turner.

The Sinclair new turner came out recently. Has anybody used it and how do you like it?

How does it compare?

Thanks for looking.

I am a complete newbie at neck turning. I purchased a Sinclair Premium Neck Turner for my new 30BR. The thing is a piece of machinists art. Unfortunately, the carbide mandrel was a bit oversized, but a friend of mine machined me another one out of plain SST.

I turned my first fifty cases today. So, I really have nothing to compare it to, but if there's a tool out there that sets up, adjusts, and works any easier than the Sinclair unit, I can't imagine what it would be, or cost. Though the Sinclair isn't cheap at ~$200, I'd think if you turn many necks, you'd probably really like this unit.

The thing worked so well, I didn't mess up a single case, and when I was through, I couldn't tell the difference between the cases I'd turned, and the turned cases that came with the rifle. If a beginner can get results like this, I figure an experienced hand could work wonders with it.

Thanks for your response.

I like the looks of the Sinclair unit. But does it really preform as well as the Forrester or

KM units. Is it faster to adjust. My present Stiller Pumpkin is to me terrible to adjust. Stiller is not supporting this product any longer.

Sometimes I feel you need two units, one for the first pass and then one for the final pass.

Again thanks for any input.

timberman, I agree with the two tool idea. if you take off most of the brass with the first cut the neck thickness is much more uniform. treeman

I really can't say if it's easier to set up than other neck turners, since I've never used another. I can offer the following, though....

My good friend and pdog shooting partner is the one who got me to try BR shooting. He's been shooting BR for a few years now, and has likely every hi-quality tool that's hit the market.

He did the initial setup on this turner for my 30BR.,He is a CAd designer for a machine shop that turns out some pretty intricate small "medical industry" parts). He was so impressed with the ease of setup and use that he asked if he could borrow it to turn a hundred 6BR cases. Said it was so much more precise than his, he hardly wants to use his anymore, and said this neck-turner just went to the top of his Christmas list.

So, I can't tell you from my own personal experience, but these comments coming from this guy are pretty impressive, considering I know his penchant for "good equipment".

edit: I do know that after the initial "rough cut" setting, there is a dial that allows further adjustment in .0005" increments, and it's absolutely "spot on" with a simple "click" of the dial. If you want to do a "first" pass followed by a "final pass", this'd definitely be the tool for you. That much I do know from personal experience.

I am the fellow Linefinder is speaking of. I've used Sinclair's older turner for a number of years, and although it did the job, I found the new model way faster to set up and use.

If you already own mandrels, expander die, and a handle, the new version will set you back about $135. The dial adjustment actually lets you adjust in increments of .0002, and I found it to be very precise.

I also like the new ergonomic design, and though it appears to be made from anodized aluminum, it still has some heft to it.

My advice would be to forego the carbide trimming mandrels, and just order the steel version. They work just as well, and can be polished up a bit if the fit isn't just right. Unless you have a diamond wheel, you ain't doing anything to the carbide.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for all your inputs. I want publicly thank the man in Los Vegas who sent me a

number of private messages.

The decision is to order a new Sinclair Premium neck turner with all the bells and whistles.

Again thanks to everybody.
