pulling tips on 75 amax to make mag length...

Hey guys, i know that 75 grain a max bullets can not safetly be loaded to mag length for an ar 15 due to the ogive and neck tension. I also know that it would be easier to just buy new bullets, but i already have a box of these a max's. Do you guys think pulling the plastic tips will get the bullets out far enough? Would this make them like the 75 hpbt's, or are they completly different animals. Thanks, brian.

I've seen a thread on this very topic somewhere else & the consensus is it works fine, despite the theories to the contrary.

I'd be reluctant to do it myself, there are good bullet choices out there that allow mag-length loading and great accuracy without breaking new ground, but heck - give it a try & let us know if it works for you.

Well, i pulled a tip from the a max. The bullet is a completly different shape than the 75 hpbt, but the same length. The biggest difference is the hollow point in the a max is at least 5 times bigger. i bet it would be an explosive round if you shot a coyote with it. The copper at the tip is super thin, therefore it may come apart real easy But, it may also slow the bullet faster or deform and be super inacurate.. I would like to see how it works in gelatin. It would be cool to have an explosive varmite round that is 75 grain. I just dont have any gel to test it. I have a really accurate load with some 75 grain hpbt and 22.5 gtain h4895. Do you guys think this would be an okay place to start some development? Also, whats a good target to test expansion besides gelatin...

I wonder why hornady hasn't thought of pulling the tips??

You can use wet newpaper stacked in a box for a cheap gelatin.

re packed wet newspaper... if too tight you don't get expansion that the bullet is capable of . shred the newspaper longitudinally, one inch strips, wad and wet and gently pack into a container. i have done this using one gallon milk jugs after cutting open the top and taping afterwards. the wet shreds are close to the consistency of a ghog. a hollow pointed 105 berger vld out of my 6-284 produced a cavity the size of a cantelope while one not hollowpointed made an exit hole of 1 inch. i have ground down the tip of a 60 gr 22 cal vmax then smoothed it so it would fit in a 223 lbc ar mag and their accuracy wasn't affexcted. tried pulling the plastic tip but some broke off. [/quote] if i can see you, i can touch you. BANG!
