ptg uni throater

Hey fellas, if this topic has been covered Im sorry, I cant find a whole lot on the actual use of this tool. I just got a remage barrel in .243 that is too short in the throat. The 105 amax and 95's are way in the case. I figured it would be that way as the barrel was gunna be sammi. I was curious if the tool is worth buying or if I should find a smith to do the work. I am very competent to do accurate/tedious work, so im not worried about that, just if the tool is worth buying and will turn out a good result. You would think with all the crap on youtube or whatever there would be something..................not the case. I dont mind buying the tool as I know I will use it again on friends stuff, and maybe to clean mine up when erosion starts.

Let me know what you think
Like always thanks in advance.

The Uni-Throater works well.
I used one on a 22 BR.
Very effective.
Easy to use.

Make small cuts and test often.

Uni Throater is easy to use. However, be very careful to check often as you ream the throat. Mine went from seating very deep with 80 Amax, to seating 1/3 above the shoulder and neck joint. Very sharp tool. I would suggest only a couple of turns at a time between measuring. Just a life lesson. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to use it again if needed on another barrel.

One turn and check is even better

It does have a stop on it, not sure why twist mattered but whatever. I am gunna order tool up and give it a go. Thanks for the advice and the heads up on checking progress often

Spin it backwards as you adjust it til you feel it touch the leade, back the adj up and spin forward to see if it cuts. I look at the cutter with a loupe to see when it starts cutting so i can get a good starting point. Best advice you got was go slow and check often

Great advise, go double slow, check, and re check often. When the metal is gone, it is gone.

Practice on a barrel stub or junk barrel if you have one, NEVER attempt this when you are stressed or in a hurry. Like Dusty said, spin it backwards to get the feel. You really can't imagine just how fast this tool cuts

Dusty, is it important what diameter we specify for the Unithroater in order to match the existing throat? How close can we practically get so there is no tool mark in the throat? Or does it just cut a whole new but bigger throat?

I try not to use em but i specify .0001 over fb dia at least so theres no chance. I figure if youre going very far its all gonna be new with no step but thats for sure a good call to check. The only time i use em is for like .100+ lenghtening like on my old 6br reamer that has zero fb ill take it to around .120 for the 105 class bullets

Its hard to practice on a junk barrel or any barrel that has 100+rds on it
Why would barrel twist be needed?

Is this a hand tool or designed for Lath?

Normally a short throat indicates it was designed to use lighter or shorter bullets. He indicated he wanted to use the heavy 6mm bullets. A caution would be advised if it were a slower twist as it might not stabilize the bullets.

How is the rifle shooting the 105's now? Velocity might be a bit down but is able to stabilize the bullet? You should be OK with that nine twist but I've had 9 twist barrels that just didn't like anything over a 100.

I can shoot the 105 amax great. I am also at 7000ft which helps. The junk 243 barrel would just let me get used to running the tool before I throw it in my new barrel. I build this gun for a hunter primarily. I was glad to see the amax shoot, but also have been shooting the 95 berger classic hunters and the 100 sgk. All seat further than I want but accuracy has been great. For the berger I would only need to ream about .040. So recently I was thinking with the accuracy being good...I just might stay where I'm at aND let throat lay down a little before I change much

Be sure to iosso or jb all the carbon out so you can select the proper bushing from your set and it doesnt dull the cutter. Carbon is bad bad on a cutter
