PTG Plans to Make Deal for 100 Stiller Viper Actions and Producing Own BR Action

I was talking with Dave Kiff and tweaking the design of a chamber reamer for a BR gun I am building and we began talking about a bunch of things. Much of it about actions.

Dave is planning on placing an large order with Stiller Precision. We talked more and when asked what action people really wanted from Stiller, I told him the "VIPER" because the waiting list is so long due to lack of production.

Dave asked me to make the following announcement for him on this web site;

Dave is going to make Jerry Stiller a cash deal to purchase 100 of his VIPER actions just to make them available to shooters since Stiller has not been producing them. I know one shooter who has had a Viper action on order for 3 years now! So this is an extremely nice gesture by Dave Kiff :)

We didn't discuss it, but I hope a good amount of the VIPER actions he orders have the DROP PORT configuration....hint, hint Dave ;)

Dave's own NEW action design will include a one piece bolt and an integral picatinny or davidson rail to appeal to both tactical/varmint and benchrest shooters. Not sure on the load and eject options, boltface options, tenon length or the footprint because we didn't discuss it at length. Hopefully Dave will post here soon and elaborate on the details of his new action design.

I'm sure Dave would welcome some of your input on Stiller actions as well.

Thanks again for going after the Viper actions for us Dave :)

I wonder what the reason for NOT making them for 3 years,

1. other more profitable
2. others have more of a demand attached to them
3. Kellby's also make that particular design
4. wait list for military contract makes the model down the list of priorities

I do not know but wish we all did know,

BUT

if he has no time to produce them then what makes Mr. Kiff think his offer will put him ahead of 1800 actions yet to be produced,

just asking, not trying to be tricky or ignorant, it seems like a reasonable question to me

Jefferson (who has a drop port diamondback already)

Hey, I'm just the messenger ;) Not sure what Dave has in mind to get 100 actions out of Jerry, but he sounded pretty confident. I'm sure it's very likely that those 100 Viper actions will be added to the waiting list unless Dave has some tricks up his sleeve...

PS: where did you get a DP diamondback? Know some people who've been wanting one of those for a long time too.

I have had one on order for almost that long as well, there actually built according to Russ it's just only Jerry or one other guy does the final touches to the Vipers and they haven't got to it for whatever reason,..Russ told me that just a few days ago,...Brandon,..Did you have him shorten the oal just a bit like I did?

Maybe Dave would order just the bodies and supply the bolt himself?

I'm not quite sure what Dave's plan is? He just asked me to tell everyone here that "he was going to get us 100 Viper actions".

Hopefully Dave will post on this thread when he gets some free time to clear up the questions that I know so many of you have.

Wayne, not sure what you are asking me about "oal"? sent you a PM

I been waiting for mine so long I figured they sold it to someone else. About the same story from Russ when I call everytime. They are working on them. Maybe one day.

Jerry and I talked and he has 1oo Viper actions in the shop he is finishing . Russ and Jerry have been phoning a few folks and letting them know they are finishing the Viper actions. Jerry is also going to start a new run of the Vipers so it sounds like he will be back with more of the Vipers in the line up. I know I will bust my ass to help him in any way I can to get all of his action caught up. As far as a new action that Jerry is producing it is the Spectre Action with integral rail . I will be talking with Jerry about helping me work on designing a better three position safety that will work with the Spectre action bolt . I just finished a Winchester one piece bolt and a Remington bolt with a Winchester, Ruger style claw extractor . Folks have talked with Jerry and myself about a action like the Spectre with such a bolt . I will talk with Jerry next week about coming out with a Stainless steel action with integral rail and a option for a One piece bolt with the extractor selection and a three position safety option . I know if he does you all better get in line because I will be purchasing a few. Come by and see Jerry and myself at the Shot Show and we can talk about what type of actions you are interested in. Nate will be there talking about the tooling and parts that he and I are making for the Savage line. Jerry and Wade mite have the Shilen Action with the floating head at the show . I forgot to call Wade the other day and see if he was going to have one in Jerry's booth. Well I need to finish up a few things before we leave for the show hope to see you there . Thanks Dave

Here is the deal.

We have approx 100 stainless steel vipers with a 20 MOA picatinney rail and the wrap design bolts in final assembly. They are mostly RBLP and a few RBRP, all 308 and no ejector and mini 16 extractors. After that they will be one piece billet bolts.

We have approx 100 aluminum vipers with davidson rail in work. The bodies are finished and we have some old style bolts with the welded handles for them with the sliding plate extractor or rem clip for the drops. Probably 50. Many different configs. The rest of the bodies will have one piece billet bolts in them after these are done with mini-16 extractors. Maybe 3 months or so on the welded ones. I have to personally polish them is the time issues.

We have a new Spectre. It is a TAC30 A/W action with a built in 20 MOA picatinney rail. It is a repeater using the AIAW mags.

The reason they have not been built before now is solely based on my personal time to do the finish work on them. Dave cannot help me with that part. He is not the hold up. It is not a profit issue. The military contract IS NOT pushing everything back, we dont even have a current order for any. Military volume is low compared to our other stuff anyway. Dave is not putting in an order for 100 or any other amount, he doesnt have an FFL. We have the list of customers wanting them. You can add to it. There is NO promises on time. Sorry to be vague, but because these and the rimfires take my time to make them work, they suffer. We are trying to get them done as quickly as possible. After the current unrest in the white house is figured out, we will have a much better plan on what we are going to be building and when.

Personally, I think Bat, Defiance, and Bordon have better actions then a Viper already, particularly to primary extraction.

My 2-cents....

I am not exactly sure where you come up with the extraction part, as our actions have better and more reliable primary extraction then most anything out there. The amount they pull back, perfectly matched surfaces generated on the 4th axis and using the thick part of the handle make it what it is. If anyone knows how to improve on that, I would love to hear it.

Jerry,
Thank you for addressing the delay on the Viper actions, glad to hear there going to be done soon maybe, I just Bought a Tac 30 and a P-1000 I wished I would have known about the Spectre I might have held off on the Tac30. At any rate is was nice hearing from you personally tell us what your doing instead of hearing it from Russ or not at all, take care and best of luck with all your new adventures.
Wayne.

I have been getting a lot of calls and emails for our booth number . It is 2048 and 2049 . Come and see Jerry and Russ From Stiller and talk to them about there products and what they have coming out in 2013 . I will try and talk Jerry in to a couple of action ideas using some of our new parts all it takes is time and money . Kevin Wyatt will be there with some great stuff including some new bottom metal and boxes. Shiraz Balolia owner of grizzly will be there with the fantastic new grizzly catalogs . Nathanial will be talking with anyone interested in the new Savage Parts and great gunsmith tooling he and I have designed in the last few months including some of the older models of bolt heads. We have a bunch of new SAAMI and Wildcat chamber reamers ,gauges and precision rifle parts on sale the four days of the show . I will have my office personnel there that are setting up over seas distributors , if you live outside the United States and are interested in selling our products and making a few bucks we will set you up . I will have Machinists there to talk to folks about new ideas for gunsmith fixtures and the many new bolt and bottom metal combinations we our coming out with in 2013 and 2014. If you have any cnc runs you may need large or small we will Quote them for you. I will be there with my head gage grinder to work on custom gages and wildcat chamber reamers. Also we will have a few midway folks dropping in with there new catalogs to set down and chat. There will be many many more folks with great ideas and great products dropping them by to show in our cases . We spend a lot of money on this show as it is the only show we do a year so we are there to help you in any way . See you there. Thanks Dave

With that said, its the 5th-axis procedure by Bat & Defiance is why. Especially on opening of pressured loads (at the top of primary).
And IMO, Bordon's trigger timing is much to be desired.

Best Regards

I have three BAT, two Borden, Farley Black Widow, Stiller Viper SS and a Pierce action. The Viper SS has seen some pretty stiff 6BR loads and shrugs them off. [br]
I would also like to hear your explanation why a 5 axis would make better helical interpolation than a 4 axis. 5 axis machines are used for complex shapes and machining all exposed sides in one setup. A helix is a helix and cannot be improved with the additional degree of freedom.

Thank's Dave for all your great new ideas, I am looking forward in getting my new reams and go gauges from you, I need to call you when you get back to make sure you have sent SFS Tom's and my sizing die reamers I can't wait to try the new wildcats,..thanks again Dave.
Wayne.

No its thank you Wayne . Pacific tool and Gauge would not be here today or have grown from four guys working out of a 4car garage in 1994 trying to live from pay day to pay day starring at the bedroom sealing worrying at night if the shop was going to make it while your kids and wife are sleeping to a 126 employer today with out customers like you all . Although Obama still has me starring at the ceiling from time to time worrying . I thank you all and know the man upstairs has blessed us with customers like you all.
