PT & G oversize Savage bolt bodies

There is less slop in the bolt so it seems to cycle smoother and it looks cool. They are priced reasonably, so I think it is worth it. Mine is in a target action, so your results may be different.

Interested in these as well, What exactly has to be done after you purchase one for fit and finish. Would this require a gunsmith, or is it a DIY project.

Thanks,
Brandon J.

Some actions should be reamed first. The reamer and bushings from PT&G is about $450.00. The reamers have to be order in specific sizes. The bolt bodies also have to be ordered in specific diameter, .700, .701, etc. They are also made a little long and have to be custom fit for correct primary extraction (usually .020- .040). This requires grinding or carbide as they are to hard for HSS or a file. The cocking ramp and shelf are cut with a carbide end mill leaving a bur/bump that needs to be removed to assist with lightening bolt lift.
Good luck with your DIY project.

I used PTG go and no/go gages to check the headspace on the original bolt body. I removed it and replaced it with the PTG spiral body. I then checked the headspace again, which was perfect. The entire process took about 3 minutes.

So no change in accuracy , just smoother cycling ? I wouldn't think it would change the headspace , as that is controlled by the lugs not the body...

I didn't notice any change in accuracy. The rifle still puts them in a ragged hole at 100 and under 1/2 moa at 600 when I don't miss a wind shift.

With the floating bolt head system that Savage uses, I would not have expected to see any significant change in accuracy.

Back to smoother cycling, how is the bolt lift (cocking) force compared to the original? How about the bolt droop at the rearmost position - any better?

I'm considering making some changes to my F/TR rifle, but it shoots so good, I'm almost afraid to.

Well this is well above my capabilities, sounds very in-depth

However,

Now that I could handle, :D

Busdriver,
The bolt lift is the same. I have a bolt lift kit from stockade that I installed about a year ago that seemed to help a little. The droop when fully open is much better. I wouldn't be afraid to make the change.

Kisatchie,
If I would have known it required complex and expensive tooling beforehand, I might not have done it. ;)

The only true gunsmithing that I have had done to it was bushing the firing pin hole and ejector delete by Gre-Tan. He was very reasonable and had a lightning fast turnaround. (less than a week)

We are starting a batch of .062 savage precision bolt heads and light fluted firing pin assemblies with a special made spring for fast lock time. Not only will we have the .062 but we will have the oversize standard fit also. They should be finished in 8 weeks. If you need any of these parts let me know so I can add them to the job card out in the shop as most of the run is spoken for . The email for me is dave@kifftool.com or call the office at 541-826-5808 .Thanks Dave

Sorry for the ignorance but what exactly does this kit do? I had my Creedmoor built on a Savage action that I would love to take some bolt slop out of. Shoots well but I'll admit it does feel sloppy when compared to my Rem 700 trued 6BR.
