PT&G one piece Bolts one size does not fit all...

Recently I purchased a one piece PT&G replacement bolt for a 700 LA magnum bolt face. This was the second one piece bolt I had bought. The first fit like a glove. This bolt was going in a "A" prefix serial number action. It looked good and opened and closed with .005" clearance between the bolt handle and action rear bridge. The problem was noticed after installing the firing pin/cocking piece, shroud assembly. The bolt now had spring pressure on it pushing it rearward and when the lugs moved down the helical out of battery at the point where the lugs were lined up in the bolt race there is .055" gap between the primary extraction cam surfaces. The bolt has no primary extraction. I checked this bolt in other Remington actions with the Prefixes "B" and "C" they had the same primary extraction issues. Dave Kiff informed me that these bolts will only fit current production Remington actions. Apparently there is a .067" difference between the first Remington 700s and the current production models. If you are going to re bolt a Remington action that is not a new production model then you need to use a two piece bolt body and bolt handle so the primary extraction can be fitted properly. Hope this saves some folks some heartache and frustration.
A picture may be worth a 1000 words. The picture is of the bolt in a Remington 700 LA Serial Number "A". The bolt handle is raised out of battery to the point the lugs are at the end of the camming ramps. Further lifting of the bolt should engage the primary extraction camming surfaces. With this bolt there is a .055" gap at the bottom edge of the aforementioned surfaces and a .059" gap at the top. At this point in the bolt opening these surfaces should be touching each other to further the case extraction. The bolt handle when in battery had a .005" gap between the bolt handle and rear bridge. As the handle is raised and the lugs come out of battery and down the helical lug abutments the bolt moves rearward, at the end of those lug abutments the primary extraction cam continues to pull the case from the chamber.

Thanks for the heads up. Be sure to watch out for that in the future as I was contemplating replacing a bolt on one of my 700's.

Love the PTG bolt with PPC face and Mini16 extractor on my Rem 722 (243 LBC T40)

A customer supplied me with a PT&G "blue printed" 700 action and a Rock Creek blank. A quick check of the tenon thread said "it's over sized". But, by how much? I measured the minor dia. with inside mics and still felt a bit confused. I went to PT&Gs web site, maybe it would state the "blue printed" thread diameter there. No such luck. So, I called PT&G and asked. The gal on the other end didin't know but asked someone. She came back with "it's an inch and a sixteenth by 16 threads per inch". No sense in diagreeing with most who answer the phone there! I ended up turning a piece of cold roll .015" over and threaded it 'till it fit the receiver. Final measurment,,, 1.071" x 16tpi. Not enough info provided with some of the 'custom' parts they sell, otherwise, you'd have bought a two piece bolt and I'd have saved 45 minutes doing reasearch and threading a stub to find out info that common sense says should have been supplied with that action. Will I trust the next PT&G "Extreme Reminton 700" "blue printed " action? I realize "all threads should be checked". I can take a receiver "trued" at Longrifles and the info will be provided, as it should be with any 'altered' component.

It is my understanding that the Remington Actions that PT&G is truing up are having the Plus .010" PT&G truing tap. which is 1.0725".

The PTG rem 700 extreme action that i received was standard 1.062" x 16tpi threads. In my email with PTG before purchasing i asked for standard threads.

I have talked with one of the Remington Custom Shop employees and he was kind enough to get me the old Blue Prints and there run tolerances for 1963 to end of revision, 1978 to the end of that revision and 1980 and1/2 to the end of that revision and there Min. to Max. tolerance varied over the years but it seems 6-11-1980 thru 1-3-1986 had the shortest length in the stackable tolerance . Most folks I have talked to since I spoke with Rusty Stud said the have used the weld on bolt handle or silver soldered handle on the rarely found extremely short length older receivers. I'm creating a new tabulated drawing using the different year prints to be able to offer a one piece bolt for the few receivers out there that will need the shorter length . For now the Builders are marking and attaching the standard or threaded handle on the one Perice bolt body . I will be adding bolt options to the Remington bolt page on our Webb site in the next four weeks . All the new receivers we are getting from Remington that we are offering, have a length held within .007 from what incoming inspection is finding. So when we sell a trued Remington Action with our one piece bolt the raceway is trued and it runs parallel to the lugs with a standard thread . Jessica is offering many different options off our Remington line and our custom Action line . If your interested in the Action options and types see our Webb Site or call Jessica here at Pacific Tool and gauge 541-826-5808 . Thanks Dave
