I had my wife look this up. She's pretty good at taking 'something someone said'..and verifying it or not.

It turns out this is an attempt to enforce rules that are already on the books.

Thank you for a breath of sanity. You are correct. WHEN you can no longer care for yourself or your affairs, then you are placed into a conservatorship and an appointed official or family member will make those decisions for your benefit. This stuff today is nothing more than smoke and mirrors to distract people from something else. I would be wary of what the other hand just did.

Not true.

Under current law, people who are "mental defectives" are barred from gun ownership – not people who need help with their finances.

Under current law, you need to be ADJUDICATED (i.e., by a JUDGE) "mentally defective" – in other words, BE COMMITTED to a mental institution – to lose your gun rights.

This new policy allows some unelected, unaccountable, anonymous BUREAUCRAT to deny someone's gun rights.

These are NOT "rules already on the books." Period.

Just curious, apart from a judge deeming a person unable to own a firearm, who else is unable to own one under current US law and how does the law stop that person obtaining one, database?

Just think about the questions they ask on the 4473.

You are not allowed to purchase a firearm if:

You are not the actual buyer of the firearm (in other words, if you are a straw purchaser)
You have been convicted of, or indicted for, a felony or any crime punishable by more than a year in jail.
You are a fugitive from justice.
You use illegal drugs.
You have been adjudicated mentally defective, or you have ever been committed to a mental institution.
You are dishonorably discharged from the military.
You are subject to a court order restraining you from harassing, stalking or threatening your child or an intimate partner or child of such partner.
You have ever been convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
You have ever renounced your U.S. citizenship.
You are an alien illegally in the United States.
You are an alien admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa.

They are using the wordcraft already in use. "Unable to care for self i.e. finances" puts you at 'risk'. IF you are a risk (not at risk you'll notice) they society demands you give up your weapons.
