Proper Neck Wall Dimensions

After learning that some of the top producers of rifle brass,Lapua, Norma, Nosler just to name a few) wouldn't be producing brass for a particular rifle,25-06 Rem.) A local friend referred me to this forum for more information.

I concluded that my next option would be necking down either .30-06 or .270 Win. I purchase some Win brass as test bait to see the results and when I tried .30-06 the results were too much variation in the wall thickness,.012-.015). When I tried .270 The wall thickness became more consistent,.012-.013)

And upon four test cases, with a bullet seated using .270 brass. I got an average OD of .284613" And if I am reading my print book correctly a .25-06 Rem chamber should have a .291 neck.

Which with the results I am currently getting with the Win Brass. I am getting .007" clearance, would this be adequate? or excessive?

First of all, IMO, Nosler doesn't belong in the same sentence as Lapua or even Norma. I think the best possible brass would be Lapua 30-06 necked down. Now depending on what kind of rifle this is, it may or may not benefit from top of the line brass. .007" clearance would be awful in a BR rifle, but in a factory rifle,it would be quite good.

I won't argue with you on that one,:thumb: my initial plan was to use Laupa .30-06 brass. Though several people I spoke with in a shooting club I am with. Suggested .270, as many know and I am sure you do to. Lapua does not produce .270. So I tried both with the cheapest I could find locally.

Though as far as tolerances, with the factory barrel. It is capable of shooting .5" groups at 100yds using factory loads. Now, again several at the club have "suggested" that I get in touch with one of the many barrel makers, and have a better barrel made for it, and work up a load for it.

How many cases do you want?

Quickest route to the best brass for you would be with Winchester. Buy 1,000 pieces, and pull out those with the least thickness variance. Check primer pockets and after fireforming, check H2O capacity, keeping only those that match. With this, you're left with brass good as any, regardless of brand.

You can perfect downsized Lapua. Eventually neck turning beforehand, then final turning to produce straight, doughnut free ammo from it.
But why bother?
Win brass is cheap enough to get the best from.
