Proper head space on my brass

Hi guys how do i finded proper head space on my new savage 12 rifle
6 mmbr Do you take out the firing pin an drop the bolt down

Using a headspace gage would be the best. If the bolt closes easily put the no go gage in, if that drops easily put a piece of scotch tape on and see if it closes using finger pressure. So you need to gauge's and PTG are the ones I like the most.

To make sure the barrel is installed correctly. To set up dies you would need the hornady headspace kit which attaches to calipers. Set your die to touch the shell holder and back it off a turn, size and measure using the hornady tool. You first measure a fired case, size and measure. Then turn the die in a 1/8 of a turn till you just bump the shoulder back .001-.002thousandths.

That's one way. However, the bolt should fall only Half of the Way Down on its own, the rest of the way, with light hand pressure from you.

A gauge is better. I use the Innovative Technologies Digital Headspace Gauge, second item down: http://larrywillis.com/ :)

Please explain this to me.If the bolt closes on the no-go what does the tape mean.I have seen barrels done with the go-gauge and then the tape and with the tape the bolt would not close!!

I think that Jon meant to say Go Gauge. Bolt should just close on the go gauge and not close with a piece of scotch tape on it. Scotch tape has been said to measure .002" thick. OP could also purchase a no go gauge. Many of us are "scotch" though and resort to the scotch tape method.

Maybe I misunderstood what you are saying here. It appears you are asking about a new, unfired rifle and new unfired brass. If that is the case, I wouldn't do anything for the first firing. After that, all the advice you've been given will work. I don't think I would change the factory barrel setting until you've fired it and find out where the factory set the headspace. At that point you can make the adjustments in your sizing die to get the correct shoulder. If you haven't already done so, Harrell's Precision will sell you a die that is fitted to your fired brass.

If this wasn't what you were asking....never mind :)
