Proper Case Neck Chamfering After Trimming?

Hey guys, I'm curious about inside/outside neck chamfering after case trimming. I'm shooting VLD's out of a 300 Win Mag and I have a double sided hand tool from L.E. Wilson for the outside neck, and a Sinclair 22 degree carbide tool for the inside neck. I'm a newbie to reloading and I have no idea what to look for or when to stop. Am I suppose to stop when the hand tool starts to free up and it goes from being rough to smooth? Am I suppose to look at the chamfer in the light and see something in particular? What gives?

The idea is to remove as little metal as possible in as consistent a manner as you can.

Inside is more important than outside unless you're dealing with gas gun cartridges, in which case they're equally important.

All that's needed is to remove the square edge and any burrs left from squaring up / trimming to length.

Be aware that you can REALLY go too far too fast with a low-angle VLD-type cutter on the insides! They require careful use, otherwise you risk thinning necks too much and/or unevenly.

Use your Wilson tool to remove the outside burr and pick up a k&m vld chamfer tool. It has a depth stop so you will get the same chamfer every time.

Well you said it here;
Am I suppose to stop when the hand tool starts to free up and it goes from being rough to smooth?
But ya gotta be carefull, that freeing up part you mention depends on how hard you push.
Then spclark said this;

And that's about it. The common new guy mistake (I've done it) is to plain cut too much out. I think the key is to just practice doing it the same each time, and with a little experiance you'll get the hang of it.

I gotta say the boat tails are alot easier to load than flat base, I'll cut a bit deeper for flatbase esp them darn little 224 bullets.
You should be able to rub the finished case on your finger and NOT get cut, ;)
