Prone Sling Stock Help

Sjett

Prone Sling Iron Sights
Need Help With Prone Stock. Getting Back to shooting prone after 14 years away from the sport. Palma Rifle in a Pearson prone stock , wood copy of mcmillan prone, never felt good with it shooting. Baker special i do better with but dont like the grip. I shoot my best scores with an Accuracy International AICS stock. Is the Mastin offset prone a good one to shoot with and does it really cure the canting problem.
Thanks for all the help
Scott

The off-set does put your eye behind the rear sight a little easier. For myself I found that modifying the cheek piece on all of my stocks was the best way to get comfortable. I whittle and sand them until my eye sits where I need it. Some like a shelf-like structure, I like to remove material from the side of the cheek and rest my cheek bone on a relatively narrow shelf. Everyone is different. Consider the cheek piece replaceable and have at it. It can be built back up with Bondo or some such if you go too far. I never said it would look fantastic but it can be painted!
You mentioned the Baker stock. I, too, liked that stock and finally figured out why. The forend is thinner top to bottom than some other stocks so that the barreled action is lower overall. Now all of my stocks are just like it but with a more vertical grip.
Welcome back!

I don't know what action your shooting or if your looking to build or just restock. but have you looked into a tube gun? They seem to be easier for people to get comfortable behind. I am personally a traditional stock shooter but I have had to heavily modify stocks to fit me before. don't be afraid to play with and modify what you have.

I have never shot a Mastin offset so I can't comment on that. Also maybe you could look in to a different sight set up. Possibly set them at a cant? This is just stuff I have seen guys do but have not ever needed myself.

Shot a Martin offset for many years, I liked it pretty well. Changed to Sitman 1600 prone stock, and wont go back. I added a taper for end compared to step of original 1600 prone.

I always felt McMillan was too boxy up front.

All actions are Remington 700 SA , except my palma gun which is an XP100 . Have 2 in AICS and may just leave them , but i just love the look of a wood stock. And every time I come across a pic of the Martin I love how it looks. Machining a bedding block to fit a remington isn't a problem. Guess I need to just get my hands on another baker special and a Martin offset and sell some other stock this winter and start grinding

Or, get someone to duplicate an AICS is wood. That would probably cut the weight in half too.

A 3 way adjustable butt plate with the heel turned away from you will cant the rifle towards you.....usually 3/4" is all that is needed.

The Warner Tool Co. thumb wheel adjustable cheek piece has a cast on/off feature that others don't offer.

A Robertson Composites-Warner Prone Stock is all I use for prone/belly gun shooting......No crutches needed/required to HOLD my rifles.

Scott,
I heard you were coming back. Glad to hear it. PM inbound. I can help set you up to demo a Palma rifle in a Mastin offset stock as well as a tube gun. I'm Eliseo tube stock all the way these days. Get with your boy Jack and let's set up a demo day on a good weekend at CRC soon.

IMG_8412.jpg I'll be bringing a new prone stock prototype to SWN in a few weeks. They'll be hardwood laminates. Should be available by March.

Looks good- I would recommend the rear end be parallel. Reason, as people transistion out of prone to FTR then the stock can be used for both without modification.

If only going to be a sling stock, I recommend a slight taper of the front end to the forend- reason being you don't have to have the support hand totally flat, a little taper allows your support hand to be more comfortable.

IMG_7862.JPG All our stocks are designed for specific shooting disciplines. A year went into our FTR design (pictured with fixed comb for use with Rad system) and its radically different than the prone stock. The foreend of the Prone is 2.125" (narrow) to avoid support hand "hot spots". I reached out to Emil Kovan, John Whidden and Emil Praslik among others for input on this design.

In my experience anything designed to do more than one thing does neither well.

Thats a good looking prone stock. Looks similar to the Robertson H&H. Don't change a thing.
