Project for Dad's Mauser action 25-06

Ok, here's the scoop. My dad has a Mauser actioned 25-06 with a stock that was hand-carved by my granddad. The stock is a sentimental piece, and he's really wanting to get this thing to be a tack-driver. He's not all that jazzed about the mauser action, and what I would like to know is, are there any options for a custom action to drop into this sentimental stock? Maybe something close enough to require minimal changes to the stock?

Thanks in advance.

Yes there is but you wouldn't want to deal with the price, up around 4K. Any commercial Mauser action will work.

Just what doesn't your dad like about the hunting rig?
The mouser action has been around for many many years and makes a fine hunting rifle.
There's nothing wrong with that action. They just have some different design s that could be improved. Like a speed lock spring by wolf .
Maybe also shorten the pin fall, and a new barrel . I would suggest to just build another rifle ,and use that one for hunting.
Here,s some of the modifications that are done to a mouser rifle
Have bolt handle replaced or bent for low scope.
drill and tap receiver for scope mounts.
speed lock the firing pin
glass bed the action
replace the barrel
change the follower this is just the basic things there are quite a few others.

Texasman811,
Sometimes the "devil you know is better than the devil you don't" If you get my drift. Find a good gunsmith and have it freshened up, polished up, new barrel and have it bedded in the stock your grandad carved for it. If you want to shoot it off the bench. Get a stock for that and have the action fitted and bedded in it when you use it that way. With a .308 bolt face you could even look at having it made a switch barrel rifle in another caliber for target shooting. Just a few ideas to kick around.
Good Luck!

You might just need to have someone in the know check it out. I have some mauser based hunting rifles that by my definition are tack drivers. Glass bedded actions and free floated barrels are a good start. My definition of tack driving on a hunting rifle are inch and under groups at 100 yards.

His rifle might just need a little tweeking (bedding, lapping the barrel...who knows for sure without checking it out) to meet his definition of a tack driver.

Just my thoughts, as I bought an older "heavy barreled varmint gun" with a mauser action. She shot under 1/2 in. At 100yards, the first time I did some hand loads for her. 22-250. Maybe a new good barrel will do it for ya?

I have a 22-250 in a Mauser 98 I bought used some yrs back.
It's a 14 twist & shoots very good. Not sure how many rounds thru
the tube so I'm putting a Krieger 12 twist on it to shoot a
heavier bullet. It's bedded in a wood stock with a floated barrel.
Maybe just a new barrel as joshb states.
