I would hate to carry a 32" inch barreled battle rifle in an armed confrontation.

Well, what if you were positioned on a hillside, about a mile away? Then the long barrel would be an asset. ;)

Kind of a very specialized situation that may never appear for a long range shooter, and remember the team needs to get into position and stay there. A very heavy gun with with rounds that are heavy may make the ingress and egress hard.

You mean like a team that packs in a Barrett .50 BMG? My point being mostly tongue in cheek, but there are clearly applications for a rifle capable of shooting a mile, and the weight of the rifle wouldn't be the prime consideration; delivering fire on target would. The only .50 BMG I toted on a few trips at the range weighed 36 pounds.

As quite a few scout sniper teams have told me 36 lbs is a lot of weight when you also have to carry water. I have also been told the Barret 50 cals in service by the Army, by a person who has shot them significantly in the service, is a 2 MOA rifle. 2 MOA is a lot at 1 mile unless you are doing HTI which the round was designed for. Muzzle blast, dust cloud, etc. is a real issue when you are trying to remain covert in a hide.

Did some more CAD work. Still a lot to do but this has been fun and I am learning a lot in the process. Does anyone think it looks like a Bat action. lol

I guess that I am lost! If you are trying to do great things with the Mosin, why redesign the receiver. A lot of us have CAD and some may have real CAD. Just buy a Bat or something.

This won't exactly be a Mosin. Probably not even close. I know my OP doesn't really reflect what my current goals are anymore. Think I should delete the OP and start over?

The why I am doing it is just cause its fun. I don't really have a lot of time so its probably going to take me 2 years to do it and you still have to have some sort of deadline or it will never get done.

Your last design is similar to some 80% actions being sold, You can buy EDM cut raceways to machine the rest your self.. I get what you want to do and think it would be fun shooting my own complete build. I can't fall inline with the caliber of choice though..

The primary cartridge would be the 300wsm. The ability to switch out only the barrel and shoot another calaber like the 54r would make for cheaper short range plinking at under 1k. The 54r has almost identical base size as WSM it's the only one I could think of so I included it.

We get a few of these projects on the forum yearly.

Exactly! I want to know what happened to the guy who was building an Arisaka into a benchrest rifle. I REALLY wanted to see him do something, because then I would not be the only guy here with a target rifle (1950's) with a 1.25 inch diameter barrel on an Arisaka! (It really takes a firm ego to admit that!) ;D

Probably the most mix & match rifle available. Multi-caliber, multi-length barrels, easily broken down for surreptitious movment: http://www.deserttacticalarms.com/
