Project Advice: Club Hog Shoots

GSPV

A failure to plan is a plan for failure.
All,

I've fallen in with a bad crowd that has tempted me into shooting "Hog Shoots".

A basic match is 3 shots each at 100, 300 and 500 yards with 10 minutes to do all setup and shooting. The targets are groundhog outlines with pretty generous score rings.

I've been shooting an old tuned M70 .243 varmint rifle and have been consistently finishing in the bottom 3rd of the pack.

What would be a winning rifle? I'm starting from scratch other than a nice Sinclair rest with windage top and Weaver T36 from rimfire benchrest years ago.

I've read about the 6BR and 30BR. The ease of case prep, load development, etc sound good. I've read that 30BR dominates in VFS but don't know how that translates.

All thoughts about configuration, how to get it,e.g. buy used rifle and rebarrel, etc.), etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, GSPV

That is why i built this:

Also, keep an eye out for the upcoming Blog ;)

tough to beat a 6BR at 600 and under! 30BR with light bullets will be no good when the wind kicks up.

Jason failed to mention that he has two victories in a row,1st place overall) with his 6BR varmint shoot rifle. Here is his latest winning set of targets.

Check out that three-shot cluster at 500! Jason says he did miss one wind call--hence the one shot well left.

So, 26-28", 8 twist 6BR. Opinions on neck?

I guess that action, of the customs, is personal preference?

Build new or buy a 6PPC w/ shotout barrel and have it overhauled?

Who would be good to put it together or do overhaul?

Regards,

Couldnt seem to find the center at 500 at the latest match...had a 2.4" group at 500, but it was 1/2MOA right so i didnt get the point i needed...no "turkey" for me :D

ALso got beat for group by Boyd Heaton's 12y.o. daughter with a 2.1" :D...darn wimmens!

.272nk
28" 5C Broughton

Action -- personal pref. and lead time, and of course $$

wouldn't overhaul a PPC...I'd go with a stock more meant for 1000 yard shooting, than 100-200yd

So,
o 28" 8 twist
o .272" neck
o Choice of custom action based on availability, etc.
o 1000 yard stock - The Lowrider or the thumbhole equivalent looks really good. Anything big to consider here?

Any other advice on chamber? The project gun was .113 freebore. I've seen recommendations from .060 to .200,eeekkk!).

Any input on list of smiths to put it together?

I'm loading .243 with basic dies on a basic RCBS press. Any input on press and dies?

I've got a smaller-sized protector cordura bunny ear rear bag. Anything better there?

Regards,

Smith -- Mark King...He isnt too far away from you...

717-834-6284

He did mine and has a killer reamer set just right for the heavies.

I dont like t-holes because i shoot free-recoil if at all possible.

Small bunny ear bag is good for the lowrider

Seater: Wilson SS Micrometer seater
FL Die: Harrell custom die

More info on both in the Gear section on our home page.

JB

Sorry, edited my previous post to be more specific before I saw your post. Mark having the reamer set up for heavy pills answers both that and the smith question. Roger on the no thumbhole as well.

Thanks!

Regards,
