process for spinning new barrel on bolt action

I wanted to get an idea of what I will need to swap barrels. I will be getting it chambered and headspaced to my action.

i will also be ordering this vice (http://www.pmatool.com/product_info.php?cPath=94_108&products_id=330) and for my BAT action, I will be ordering this wrench (http://www.pmatool.com/product_info.php?products_id=351). For my 700, I will be ordering this action wrench (http://www.pmatool.com/product_info.php?cPath=94_107_113_109&products_id=350).

my question is, will I need go/no-go gauges, torque wrench?

the videos I have seen have been simply torquing it so it is snug. I dont know if I need go-no go gauges if the action is already headspaced to my action, so i look to you guys to help me out.

Hello Sir,

I use a barrel vise similar to the one you show but for the action I use a rear entry wrench from Sinclair and a torque wrench & socket to get repeatable action torque installation on my barrels.

This topic has been covered many, many times on various shooting forums. A Google search will yield tons of info.

However, if your barrels are indeed already headspaced to the action to which they will be attached, then you merely need the tools to assemble (or disassemble) the parts. Meaning, a vise and a wrench. As to torque, the debate continues. Some believe in hand tight (I kid you not) and some believe in torque beyond the lug nut spec on my wife's M series BMW (I kid you not).

I suggest you call BAT and ask them. http://www.batmachine.com/

Regardless, be sure to put a bit of antisieze on the barrel tenon threads before you snug it up. :)

Save yourself a couple dollars and get the Viper vise from PMA. I've got one and it's a work of art. No need to protect the barrel when using it because it is "coated" and it leaves no marks. PMA is great to do business with. If they have the action wrenches you need, I'd order them from PMA because shipping is only $5.95 for the entire order.

"Spinning" a barrel on?? You must be hanging around Vu.

installing a barrel?

chambering and headspacing a barrel?

slapping on a barrel?

LOL. The NCPPRC guys are crazy. I am serious in shooting both the tactical with my 6.5 creedmoor and with the F-Class/BR guys with my soon to come 284 Shehane F-Class rig. So I'll get the best of both worlds.

My smith put witness marks on the barrel and receiver for my switch barrel. Line them up and head spacing is back to exact. I do however think using a tourque wrench might give better results. Haven't tried that yet though so I can't say.

I've never had or used witness marks. If you go past your witness mark about .030", what happens. Do you think that the shoulder of your barrel is moving closer to your receiver?

Some people just don't get it Butch ;D

I'm not too anal about this. I use a wrench with a 24" cheater. It is tight when I bear down on it. I weigh 260. Just for grins I put the barrel on with a 11" wrench and checked headspace. I put the 24" cheater on and put a little pressure on it. No headspace change.

I also do not use witness marks, I put it in the same category with an old procedure that is useless. The only time it MIGHT be useful is if you need to index a barrel for sights, but then if you turn it 5-10 thou short or past you can't see it and the sights aren't correct anyway, I use a level.
