Problems With Scales

It depends upon your rifle and how much accuracy you are looking for. Most people don't have all the trouble listed on this thread. Beam scales can be affected by air currents also. It also depends if you are weighing cases, bullets and primers. They are really hard to do on a beam. Matt
I don't weigh primers!

I have a friend that works as the lead IT tech at Purdue Univ. I have been relating the issue i am having with the scale, he says, no carpet.. in the room. Well i am making sure of that.. going to paint the floor. He said if i could get a ESD mat, it should solve the problem with the static, that and a ESD wrist band.. so i am the middle of moving things around right now.. when i get it all done.. i will report what i come to up to that point..

What ya wearing? Certain rags and/or footwear, especially on carpet, breeds them evil ‘trons more so than would others.

Thanks for that info I know there is good reason guys buy these scales. I'm not there yet but hopefully I will be one of these days

Ok.. i have moved the scale now into the newly created room, i set the TP-153 up first and let it warm up. After doing the cal on it, it would flicker and not stay stable.. unplugged it. Set up the FX-120i, let it warm up, did the cal on it, walked away, walk up to it, took the cover off (this is the only time it moved), stable, non moving and not flickering like it did before. So i have to surmise that where i had the work bench previously was not conductive to a good environment for the scale. Once i get the room totally finished, there will not be drafts in this room at all. I have to hope that this will be all that is needed without any other additions done to promote a good healthy diet of electrons for the scale.

There's the problem right there. You must have missed the instructions on page 41, paragraph 3, about half way down the page. It says, "Operator MUST be buck naked at all times while using this scale". It's written in French, easy to overlook!

Glad you got your problem worked out, those scales are the cats ass. I love mine.

Like i said, there is a electrician coming over first of the week, (i have been trying to get him for while for another project) that will give me an opportunity to discuss some of these options and look at the situation.
Ok.. i received a new FX-120i today.. i am getting the same problematic results with it as i did with my Denver Inst TP-153 (Strain Gauge).. they are flicking back and fourth, as much as 15 digits in either direction (+ or -).. it is driving me absolutely nuts.. i can't tell you how much i am disheartened right now, thinking that my Denver was going bad, only to see the A&D doing the exact same thing..
I have the same scale and have never had a problem. I guess I am just lucky. I did have a fellow reloader try his scale, that was experiencing somewhat similar issues to yours, at me house and it was just fine - no fluctuations. His fix was having an isolated ground receptacle installed and the issues went away. Good luck.

Well i am still considering the isolated outlet for it. I will be putting in a 30 amp buddy box for my camper to plug into behind the house to keep the battery maintained.

I prob would if my 81 year old mother wasn't living here too!

This may have already been suggested but a good "cheap" anti-static hack is to place your scale on a laundry anti-static sheet. You might need a few if the scale is too large. Fluorescent lights DO NOT cause scale fluctuations. It's a myth. I use my Gem Pro 250 under a fluoro shop light 3' above my work table. I also have a fluoro spot on a goose neck for close up inspections.

Never had all those problems. Did have some and tried the LED lighting thing. Still frustrated, I ended the problem. Use the electronic scales for the first dispense and weigh. Now I ignore the fine electronic one. Just transfer the powder to one of my three M5 Lyman balance scales for final weight.

Problem solved.

@Operator MUST be buck naked at all times while using this scale” Not plum’ buck raw naked but maybe a couple buck naked feets would help, and not land folk in jail and/or divorce.

My scale goes crazy when my cell phone gets close to it.
Since i have moved it, i have talked to several folks on the phone (cell) and the scale sits there quietly biding it's time.. never moving. Not saying that i would load ammo. After all, they say that talking on a phone and driving isn't good, i can only imagine how bad it is trying to talk on a phone and load ammo..

Personally, my solution to this problem was a nice condition used RCBS 10-10 from eBay. I have found gravity to be unaffected by drafts, fluorescent lights, cell phones, power fluctuations, flooring material, and clothing choice (or lack thereof).

Gravity just don't care. I'm a big fan of gravity now.
