Problems with .17-338 LM

The brass is an old lot of Federal Lightning that I forgot I had.
This lot is FAR Superior to either Lapua or Eley

Run out is .00001
Rim thickness is consistently .040

Yes I have tried the 115 DTAC but couldn't get the boat tail below the case mouth/tannerite junction, which made the round too long for reliable feeding from a magazine.

I did however try the newest addition to the 6mm lineup.

The Boat Point Hollow Tail. BPHT

These shot only OK and velocity wasn't there like I had hoped.
Mag feeding was improved from the shorter OAL though.

I'm patiently waiting to try a 30-LR-Mag as soon as my reamer and dies come in.

Snert, where's Snert?? He's an expert on such things!

Rolling about on the floor laughing! But I am a bit perturbed no one told me they were doing the 416 Hornet. I could have helped. My Lott Improved Hornet is the nuts!

But those 22LR6mm flat nosed rounds are simply inspired!

When I made my 416 Hornet the biggest problem was the brass in the neck was only .002 thick. I'm only getting 13 or 14 reloads before that brass wears out.

If you anneal it with Analeez and improve it to a Lott Improved, it will last longer..up to 25 reloads. Then you may note some primer pocket loosening. I find a finish nail and hammer will peen a crimp into the edge of the UNPRIMED case, and then you can prime it. Don't try to do this with a primed case. I have found that it is hard to keep the loose primer in there whilst hitting the edge of the pocket with the sharp nail. No other issues, just convenience to do it with an unprimed case.

This is a GREAT thread. With Fredo's Redline succinctly disproven, it is time we return to sensible wildcatting. Sally forth ya'all

Finding powder with an appropriate burn rate was my biggest hurdle. Turned out that pulverized charcoal briquettes work great.

The burn rate on Match Light is faster so don't think they are interchangeable! Watch you lot numbers also as the original was a little slower...

our biggest problem with the 17/338lm was not being able to see the holes at one mile,
when we went up to 22/338lm it was a lot better. bbl life jumped up to about 75-80 rounds.

If you use Luvs Baby soft to prep your bore and then dip your bullets in oatmeal (cooked) overnight you will reduce bore fouling and extend barrel life. Really.

If you put your normal load of bullseye mixed with w870 in there and fill the rest of the case with the swiss miss you get longer case life AND negative number SD

You guys are all looking at this from the wrong angle. Stop trying to neck down so small, so fast. Instead, try a more "stepped" approach. Example:
