Problems with .17-338 LM

I am having issues necking down my .338 LM cases to .17 cal. Should I do this in mutiple stages? I am collapsing necks/shoulders with doing it in a single pass. The few cases I successfully formed have 0.029" neck walls. Should I turn them down first? Also, I am having to crush Pyrodex pellets to get them through my powder funnel. Anyone use straight black powder?

Thanks in advance

And happy 04/01!;)

Ive had great luck necking down to 17 in 36 steps each step using a custom die a bit smaller than the previous. Reloader 100 has been a great sucess as well with velocites approaching 7000 fps, i had to go to custom turned bullets though.

I used a similar process as Sawyer on my 20BMG cases. Getting 7950 fps with a much better bc than anything 17 caliber.

I have to use 50 steps to neck my 50BMG to .17. Using 150 gn. of 231 for 9,500 fps. Only problem is the barrel is done after 50 rounds.

When I made my 416 Hornet the biggest problem was the brass in the neck was only .002 thick. I'm only getting 13 or 14 reloads before that brass wears out.

Since it's Easter I remind you all that David got by with a sling and a stone . .. .

Turn the case around.

Seat the .17 bullet into the primer pocket after first opening the flash hole up. Now turn the neck down to grab a primer and crimp that primer in tight.

Simple to do and you don't have to make a reamer. Just reverse the barrel and put the tenon on the other side. Other minor adjustments may be required.

Finding powder with an appropriate burn rate was my biggest hurdle. Turned out that pulverized charcoal briquettes work great.

Headed to emergency room now. I was trying Captain's idea when I somehow shot myself in the eye. Luckily the only way that would work was left handed so my shooting eye is still good.

I just drive over mine with the Jeep a few times. necks er right down.. And if ya use Weatherby brass it holds several grains more powder.

How about a phonograph needle in a 20mm case?

(What's a phonograph needle or are they even made anymore.....I can hear it coming)

I am in the process of developing a whole new concept of smokeless metalic cartridge. It will consist of having a cartridge that is shoots a .177 bullet out of one end and a .338 out of the other!! BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!! Still working out the finer details, but, it looks promising!! ;)

Oh yeah, they do. Here is a link to the company I got my cartridge with needle from, actually it is called a stylis.

Their top of the line cartridge is more than $15,000. They don't post prices for that one, only the more modestly priced cartridges.

I've had some good luck necking .22 LR to 6mm.

Initial load development was a little tricky but I think I've found the "sweet" spot. Haven't shot it past 300 yet but am hoping to go to 1000 soon.

Wind was blowing around 35mph and switchy when I shot this group, I'm slowly learning to read the wind.

You guys are going about this all wrong. I have been able to get a consistent 1 in. groups at 1200 yds. using a 338 LM case and a 17 cal. fined titanium dart in a 338 sabo. with a 34 in. Kreiger 1 - 24 twist. with H4350. Got the idea from the Abrams anti tank round, but could not find a source for a 17 cal. depleted uranium dart. I know hard to believe. I attached a couple of pictures of my case and dart.dart 1.png [/ATTACH] dart 2.jpg dart 3.jpg

Try it my way. I actually cut down the 50 BMG and slowly worked it down. It's a single shot due to the case diameter. Wouldn't fit in a SA mag even with the feed lips removed. Shoots phenomenally well in a 20 twist bore barrel out to only 250 yards before losing stability.

Is that using Eley or Lapua brass?

Also, have you tried any HMX loads? Wondering if that would get you the extra velocity you need out to 1k; you might be able to push a 115 gr. DTAC with that, too.
