Problems sighting in... A few questions!

I have a Savage 7mm Mag that has always been dead on. Last season I could not hit the broad side of a barn. A buddy of mine looked in the end of the scope, tapped the side a couple times and said the crosshairs were busted so I bought a new scope and new rings but still was unable to get the gun sighted in.

Any ideas? All the external parts of the gun seem tight...the scope seems tight. What else can I check on this gun?

Any true way to check a scope? I hate that I bought a new scope and that probably isnt even the problem.

What is your definition of can't get sighted in? Can you not get it on the paper at all or, does it just not group very well ?

What does the crown look like?

Is the barrel clean? You might consider scrubbing it with bore paste.

Make certain you poke the barrel down into the floorboard of your vehicle when transporting so as to get gravel, grit, grime into the crown and muzzle and you're good to go! That's what these rednecks around here do and they kill deer every year!! ::) ::)

Can't get it sighted in......lots of different definitions
Assuming the correct ammunition (reloads-factory?).
If you sit 25 yards from a 3'x3' white paper target.....where do 3 shots wind up? On the paper at all?
Or are your 100yard groups larger than what you would like?
2 scopes being bad...sure it's possible but unlikely.
Really need an answer to the first sentence.

It is on paper at 100 yards, but all over it. At 25 yards, it is a 3-4 inch group.

Crown?

I use the regular Hoppes solvent, first using the brush, then a couple cloth swabs then run a couple dry ones down it.

lmmike...I got your message, will call after work.

Alot of these terms are new to me...I am one of the rednecks mentioned (LOL) that has always simply shot and cleaned my firearms and never ran into problems. I do baby them and not know them around though.

Well 3-4" at 25 yards is not good.
I have to ask: Is the ammo you are using factory ammo and is it marked 7mm Rem Mag? No offence meant but I watched some guys sighting in one day. Two or three rifles. Regular steady deer hunters. One rifle was all over the place. I watched and listened. All 3 of them shot this guys 30-06 and none of them hit anything. I walked over. The ammo they were shooting was 270Win.
Point is 3-4 at 25 yards...this is not a crown problem.....wrong ammo...loose rail....wrong or loose rings....to me it is something that you have overlooked. And that being said you are left with a possibly defective scope. If the reticle is bouncing around you don't have a chance. But it is scope #2. Any chance of borrowing someone else's
scope if everything else checks out?
Good lock and let us know.

Hoppes is nice as a cologne. I would get yourself some Shooter's Choice, or Boretech, or Wipeout and give her a good scrub. Hoppes really only takes out the powder, not the copper.

Your crown is the bevel of the bore end of your gun. If its roughed up or has a burr on it will cause a degrade in accuracy.

If your action screws, the screws that hold your action in the stock are loose it will give you poor accuracy. check your torque on them.

I had a buddy like that once, what are you asking for the busted scope? I am just kidding, please take this in the spirit it was given.

loose barrel or another bad scope.

I have had kids jerking the trigger and closing there eyes
shoot better groups so i guess its not the shooter.

The ammo was the same as the previous year...same ammo type, grain etc, that I always shoot from this gun.

For the busted scope, I was just asking is there a true way to check the crosshairs? Everything looks good to me. Crosshairs look fine.

Yes, sturdy rest with bags...I can put the 7 mag down, pick up my .308 and group perfectly using the same rest.

I will check the action screws and am also thinking about pulling the scope and remounting it. I will also go today for some new gun cleaning items.

New scope is a Burris 4.5 x 14
Old scope was a Redhead (BassPro) 6x18-50...yes it is a cheap scope but did quite well for quite a few years.

There's such a thing as a Hood Scope Checker. You mount the checker on the rifle and then mount two scopes on it, beside each other. Align the cross hairs and take a shot. The cross hairs should still be aligned with each other after the shot. I have one and use it from time to time. Charlie Hood no longer makes them, I don't think. You may be able to beg, borrow, or steal one from someone down your way. I have one but I'm a bit too far north to be of any use to you. The Hood Scope Checker is an aluminum block about 6 inches by 4 inches by 1.5 inches. It is beautifully machined with a female dovetail on the bottom and two male dovetails on the top. You slide the checker on the rail on the action and mount two scopes on the top two rails. Blast away and presto, check your scope.

If you have a scope rail check the threads/screws. I had a .338 win mag with poor threads on top of the action. Recoil actually sheered the rail screws loose but I wasn't convinced at the time so sent another down range. That round literally tore the front screw in half and the whole rail and scope was hanging at 9 o'clock. :o
