Problematic 22BR

Problems should be solved this afternoon. There is a burr right on the edge of the chamber chamfer that was causing the ring on the brass. And the case necks were too long and I was crimping neck onto bullet whilst seating and chambering the rounds so thats my pressure source. All cases trimmed back to 1.545, the chamber problem fixed and im starting from scratch and working up with the VLD's and sierras again.

Sharps, you obviously dont get the picture so Im not going to bother. If I wanted to buy a 243 and use 90gr bullets as a hunting gun I would. But this is a semi custom target rifle, with a wildcat chambering that has been done successfully before as Ian has pointed out. Dont bother shouting out stupid advice unless you know something about the 22BR that could help me.

Warm regards

Brad

Righto got on the 300m mound today and shot a 114.4 with a load of 30.5gr of 2209 (H4350), berger 90gr VLD's jammed 0.020" and CCI 450 primers.

I only had a few test loads yesterday and this one came up about 0.5" for 3 shots. I couldnt really test it further as it was too late in the afternoon and it wasnt showing any pressure sign so I loaded enough for the two details and a few sighters. It held consistent groups, the few shots I dropped were shots 7-10 in the first detail and they all went low for some reason and one went right just out of the 6 ring with a light wind gust. Second detail was consistent 58.2- plenty of shots in that detail that were very close to the x ring. I will chrony it to see what velocity its getting, and might also bump the charge up a bit more to see if I can find another node. From here its going to be tweaking seating depth a bit as well to get it shooting as tight as possible.

The problems with the chamber are gone so its time to get shooting!

Lately, I have noticed these super long and pointy 90VLD's aren't sensitive to seating depth as much, I have yet to see much of a difference in a .020 jam, .010 jam, .010 jump or .020 jump with a "slight" nod to the .020" jam

I am shooting the 90 grain MK at around 3,050 fps with no problems at all. The other bullet that I have shot is the 82 grain Berger, also with no problems. The powder of choice has been VVN550, even though it is currently impossible to find at this time. I have also been using the CCI 450 primer. I have a .252" NK and I turn to .012" to clean up the necks. I am not to fussy about the seating depth since I use an Accumajic barrel tuner in the forearm of my stock. I have never had the Sierra bullet come apart at the velocities that I am running at. Before Kevin Thomas left Sierra, we had a chance to talk about the blow up issues of this bullet, over dinner, and he felt that since I am using a cut rifled, canted groove, 5 groove barrel, I may not be putting as much stress, and friction, into the bullet so that it will not fail down range. I did have the bolt fact bushed, and this took care of my primers showing pressue, almost identical to what your cases look like. I would recommend this if you are using a production action. Two other powders are showing some potential to try, according to some Quick Load simulations that I have done. IMR-4895, and Ramshot Hunter, were very close on the heels of the VVN550, and they are much easier to come up with, at this time. I will be testing them to see how they compare to my VVN550 load.

I hope that this will assist all of you.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the input. I dont have access to any of those powders but AR2209 (known as H4350) seems to be shooting well and its similar in burn rate to VV550. Are you jamming the sierra or jumping it?

I have been seating about .010" off of the lands and then tuning the load with my barrel tuner. I will be pulling the tuner out, and then testing to see what the barrel will prefer without the tuner.

Look's to me that thwe reamer's flute's are too short to be able to cut a concentric and correct length of the body part.Time to call dave kiff and get a good reamer.
