problem with SEB NEO II rest

During a match I found I couldn't move the rest to the down position. It would go up just fine when turning the hand wheels but wouldn't go down. Took off the hand wheels and removed the clutches on both sides and the rest would then move up or down with no resistance. What's going on? I want to put the clutches back in but I want the rest to work like when new. I purchased it new about a year ago.

If it wasnt going down, it must have been binding on the post or the gear engagement was to tight and if not cleaned often that could also be the cause. Hopefully you paid careful attention while disassembling because it requires some adjustment on both sides when putting back together to get the correct gear engagement as well as up/down spring resistance to counter the weight of the rifle. The rod with the gears on it is also held in place and adjusted from both sides so that it stays centered on the posts and you need to play with that also. To adjust backlash you need to do it by trial and error until it feels good for you.

It's hard to explain on a post. Hopefully someone has a video of how to correctly perform this operation!

Or better yet, contact Ernie Bishop or Seb via phone, email or PM.

Dave,

Please don't do anything more for a while.
Unless you are able to re-install the handwheels etc correctly?
It's about the brake/clutch inside.

Lawrence is correct, it's hard to explain on a post especially for me because English is not my everyday language, but actually it only needs about a few minutes (or probably a few seconds with a plastic/rubber mallet only) to fix the issue, depends on why the up & down movement suddenly difficult to move?

I will try to make a short video tomorrow and show you how to fix yours.

Seb & Lawrence97,
Thank you for your replies. Thank you, Seb. I will be looking for the video. I tried to contact Ernie but his website is no longer in service. Seb, I tried contacting you though your website but it kept asking me for a correct telephone number and I never could satisfy it. I called Ratigan and left a message.

Seb, NEO parts, how do we get them? I have a fellow shooter with a NEO and the plastic handle stripped out on the left side.

Seb, your English is better than a lot of people on this site who are from this country!
Dave

Dave,

For NEO parts you can contact Ernie or Mike - but I would recommend you to get the parts from whom you bought the rest. I can send the parts soon if they don't have them in their inventory.
Also when you ordering the parts, please specify the part #s shown in the exploded drawing.
Many times I do not understand which part(s) our dealers or customers are referring to.

I am trying to upload the video in youtube now... It's a short video showing how to find and resolve the up & down problem of the coaxial unit in the posts.
I assume that you have no problem with the posts, only with the clutch system inside. Also that you have removed the clutch brake inside.

Sorry I have no clue how to edit the video, to put text, etc?... only hope it works and you can understand with my poor language... :-[

Okay it works now.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO-1XxfRLyU&feature=youtu.be

In addition:
The down rotation of the handwheel is (and should be) a bit heavier than the c.c.w. rotation, this is normal and supposed to be. (When you put weight on the top, the up & down force would be about equal). This means that the coupling springs work properly, and in correct place (not reversed).

Do not over-tighten the side screws (part #26 in the exploded drawing) that hold the handwheel in place, as it could cause over-tension on the clutch inside.
If the down rotation is still so tight, first loosen the screw #29, then loosen the side screws #26 for about 180 degree c.c.w. Re-tighten screw #29, and bump the handwheels from side to side..
You can adjust the small headless screws on the side of the handwheels (#28 in the drawing) to add or reduce the pressure on the brake drum inside. Deeper = more tension.

I re-read your OP, you said that "It would go up just fine when turning the hand wheels but wouldn't go down".

Many times a hard bump/tap or two on the handwheels will release the "bite" on the clutch...just like what I did in the video, or you can use a rubber/plastic hammer. --- That could be the case on/of your rest... that's why I said that the problem could probably be fixed in a few seconds, i.e. only by bumping the handwheels to release the "bite" on the clutch.

However I was told/reported a few days ago that someone else's NEO rest had problem with the posts, not the clutch system. So, if that is the case on your rest I will make another video addressing problem on the rack gear posts.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions or problem.

seb.

Edit: to add some words.

Thanks "noload".

I only hope that my response is informative / can be a help.

I want to tell everyone that Seb immediately responded to my plea for help and continued to try to help me find a cure to my problem. It is a mystery as to why my problem developed and it is still a mystery after detailed trouble shooting. My problem is somewhat better but Seb wasn't satisfied with a partial cure so he is sending me two new clutches. We will try that. Meanwhile, do I like the SEB NEO rest? Absolutely. Would I recommend others to purchase the rest? Absolutely! Does Seb stand behind his product? Again, absolutely! You cannot go wrong with the product and the service.
