I wipe my finger on a clean part of my pants or shirt...tobnpr - I clean contact faces by running yellow microfiber cloth between the faces; not too tightly. I thought this might work better than sliding paper between them. Seems to work OK. I know sliding paper that way is in Mitutoyo instructions, but I think maybe the paper approach predates microfiber. All thoughts are welcome.
then use my finger to wipe clean the surfaces of the anvil

The micro grooves on your fingerprints works well to pick up and sweep away any particles
even micron size can be felt

Not saying this is "The Best" method, but if you are measuring often it is a quick and efficient method

Funny story to qualify this method ...
...when I was a CNC machinist, and our tolerances held were in the 1/10th's
For very small parts we made
When I would blow off the table of the mill, or the Kurt vise ...my boss always said to then follow up by wiping over the surfaces using my hand and fingers to ensure no particles were left.
And he had a very good reputation of excellence with his contracts including Govt.
So I would not discount using skin as a cleaning method
I have a surface plate I also use this method before surfacing, even if I blow it off first,
I can feel any small particles left due to static and wipe them off with my hand and fingers.
They stick to your fingers better than they stick to the surface.

That's if you know your skin is clean of course
