Primers ?

In 223 cal which primers are preferred by you guys ? I have been using CC Next I BR 4's that I bought from a fellow club member for $15.00 per brick. When they are gone is it worth paying full price for more or are other primers just as good ?

You could probably build a load around most quality primers,
You could also test them side by side using a base load however once selected a bit of testing on either side of your powder charge to confirm would be my direction.

I like Rem 7 1/2s and CCI 450s . Powder, bullet, brass, dictates to me which primer my load likes best . I have also found the Federal match primers will be even better than the Rems or CCIs ,all depends on how the variables all mesh together .

I would just try several along with powders. The idea being to see which combinations work best with the loads you want to shoot. I use CCI 400 as well as CCI BR4 and with some powders the CCI 450. I also like the Remington 7 1/2 and Federal 205 primers but it is a matter of what works best for you and your rifle(s).

The more I see of small cartridges and SR primers the more convinced I am that many such cartridges are very sensitive to primer make and model. This seems to apply particularly to designs with the small flash-hole - Grendel, BRs, 6.5X47L etc. I saw this last year with a very knowledgeable friend being astonished as to how a primer change alone in 6.5X47L turned a non performing load with his usual model into a superbly grouping example. I also noted the other day when looking for 6.5 Grendel pet loads on the 65grendel.com forum that Bill Alexander, the cartridge's father, gives a 'try this first' suggestion then says having got the best performing charge weight, try as many primers as possible to get best results.

Also, SR primers seem to sometimes vary considerably between production lots. Complaints on this forum about SR primers have as far as I can make out risen considerably over the last two or three years.

I use CCI 400's for the most part, and developed one 223 load with S&B SRP's, luckily I have about 5 or so bricks left. BR4's I use in 204R but may have to look for something else with the way they gone up to around $80/brick.

Yep and that is why when I buy primers I try to buy between 5,000 and 10,000 of the same lot. Primers have a long, long shelf life. :)

I went to my local reloading supply stores and bought 100 of everything I could lay my hands on. I tried 8 or 10 different primers, and found that WSRs worked best in .223 with RL-15 and N-550 (LC and WW brass, Hornady 75 gr BTHP & A-Max moly coated). I by at least 10k at a time, and the WSRs are very consistent (I test each lot). Oddly, I find that Federal Match primers work best in my .284 loads (RL-17, 162 gr A-max moly coated, WW brass).

Depending on what type of shooting you are doing - if you just want reliable primers that hold up to pressure well and are capable of very good accuracy through low SD's - there are many to choose from, though I have had best results with Federal match, Rem 7 1/2, CCI BR4, wolf and Tula

In my .223 I use CCI 450. I started using them when primers were of short supply. At the time I was shooting my F gun with a very stout load of Varget and was blanking primers until I switched to 450's. Then discovered when I develop a load using them from the start, they are good in all my .223's.
