Primers for 300 Win. Mag.

Am thinking of loading some 300 Win. Mag. rounds to shoot in a friend's rifle. How critical is it to use magnum primers? I have some regular Winchester large rifle primers that burn pretty hot. Will they work?

I think it depends on what powder you are using. Speer has always used magnum primers in all their load testing using ball powder. If you are trying to ignite a large volume of ball powder. it may require a magnum primer. Testing is the only way to find out.
OTOH, Winchester primers were probably designed to ignite Winchester ball powder so it may not be an issue.

I use BR2's almost exclusively. I haven't had an FTF - yet - and I have shot in almost every condition imaginable, including sub crazy zero (-30's Fahrenheit). BR2's "appear" to be pretty tame in comparison to most other primers.

I also use H1000 almost exclusively, so there is that.

I agree. H1000 is fine with BR2's. If I was using a ball powder, I would be looking at Federal magnum match.

The U.S. military specifies:

DETAIL SPECIFICATION CARTRIDGE,
.300 WINCHESTER MAGNUM MATCH,
MK 248 MOD 1
DODIC AB43, NSN 1305-01-568-7504
Revision A 17 March 2009

3.4.3 Primer. The primer shall be a large match rifle primer, non-corrosive, nickel-plated, boxer type, and shall be of lead styphnate type. The primer shall have a brass anvil and brass cup. The primer shall be capable of meeting the ballistic requirements herein.

Depends on powder and temps in my experience. I have a load using RL 22 with 180 gr NBTs/NAB's that I use CCI LR primers in that does fine. I also have a load with 220 gr NCCs over H1000 that I had delayed firings with regular CCI LR primers and so I had to move up and chose Federal 215 mag primers and that solved the problem.

The Winchester large rifle primers have worked really well with H4831SC so far.
Am on the notification list for magnum primers when they become available and will test them then.

Thanks for all of the helpful replies.
