Primer sticking to decaping pin

this is strange, I use a progressive press for pistol loading, lately, I have experienced the following,

size stroke, plate advances, stroke to seat new primer -- wont go, take case out of press and the old primer is still in.

I called RCBS and they indicated the same occurring with CCI Primers in cases the primer gripping the end of the pin and being pulled back into the case. not all CCI primers do this but a lot do I am told

the suggestion to solve the problem - which did not always work, grind the end of the pin FLAT - not leave it rounded

this works about 80% of the time but I still have to watch - if the dead primer drops on the size stroke - this is true with range brass where there is a mixture of my brass and some others where the primers CCI being used in some factory and reloaded cases

any of you have this happen? I had some last loading session.

I have seen this also in my 223 with LC brass and have tried a bunch of stuff with no help,,I figured it was the primer pockets were so tight the decap pin was having to push so hard it was grabbing the primer and pulling it back up,,I have had it with WW and Fed primers as well as CCI,,I never have this with 10-12 other calibers I load and just figured it was the brass,,

If the decapping pin is too pointed on the end, it can stick in primers easier because it allows the pin to drive deeper into the primer anvil. Use a dremel tool or a grinder to slightly flatten the tip of the decapping pin, then hand sand off any sharp or rough edges with 400 grit so it doesnt scratch up the flash hole. Also make sure the end of your decapping pin is positioned well below the base of the die to ensure you are fully ejecting the primer from the pocket.

Ledd, been there done that, and It still happens - try this

it seems if the primer is in tight, the pin presses further in and the back side of the anvil grips the sides of the pin and holds on,

if the last 1/16" of the pin is reduced in size by a few thou the anvil can not stick.

That makes sense. I have had this same issue and the flattening of the pin tip helped me. But the primers that gave me the issue werent stuck like they were crimped in. They required a normal amount of force to remove. i can definitely see how reducing the size of the pin would work as well.
