Yes measuredtge caveas. Primer pockets go from .005 to .013. If I used the franklin aresonal had primer that adusts depth would that work? Never tried one

That appears to be seating depth you're talking about??? What's your measurement for the case's primer pocket depth . . . like .132" or what?

.013 seating depth is a lot and that would certainly explain light strikes. If it's the cases primer pockets that are particularly deep, then controlling the depth of seating might help "a little". I've got a Franklin Arsenal adjustable primer seating tool and it works ok for being able to get somewhat of a consistent seating depth (21st Century one I have works way better. . . but for more $$$$). If the case's pockets are really deep, controlling the seating depth might not help??? That why I'm asking about what the depth measurement actually is.

I had to uniform Starline 357bbrass because my Federal 200 primer was sitting way to high. I had 800 and they all had to be cut down.

I helped (along with the range manager who uncharacteristically had come out of his office) some guy at my range troubleshoot a non-firing rifle with once fired reloads. Turns out his primers were seated way, way deep. I asked about his reloading habits, and he (rather sheepishly) admitted that his OCD made him clean pockets until every speck of non-brass color was out of them, using one of the end mill type cleaning tools . In short, he had deepened his pockets by well over 0.010". The range manager just rolled his eyes and walked away.

Just so we are all on the same page my measurements of .005 to .013. Was distance from back of case down to fired primer while primer is in cases at .005 fired with no issues. Those at .013 not so much. Just dimpled the primer not enough to detonate.
I have now had time to measure new cases with no primer for primer pocket depth. I also measured the depth of the CCI 250 primers.
Cases are between .130-.136 in depth. I measured12 random new sized cases with a Cabelas digital caliber. I then measured 12 new CCI 250 primers. They are .124-.128 high. Taking all of that into account I am going to unload some primed brass that I measured the primers pretty deep. If I can plainly see it it’s to deep. So now for the question. Instead of seating the primers a bit checking then a little more check until it is where I want is there-a better way? I was looking at the Frankford Arsenal hand prime that allows you to set depth. Any recommendations for this?

Honestly there's nothing wrong with seating to primer cup seating anvil with slight crush by feel.i will never seat by a setting or measuring.just asking for one ti not be seated deep enough imo

By feel is most consistent.
You either got bad brass,wrong primer/bad spec primers or as stated tighten mainspring.

Those primers in pic do look mighty low below case rim

I have about 30 years experience handloading but all have been bottle neck rifle cases. I can consider myself lucky as I never had a primer sunk to deep in the primer pocket. Now loading for my 500 mag using starline brass and CCI Large rifle magnum primers. The last batch had 5-6 out of 25 with low primers causing light strikes and no detonation. My question is can I do anything to save the brass? I know it’s only a few pieces so if not it’s not the end of the world. Typically I would pound bullet free dump powder then fire off the primer making it safe to start over. Can’t do that with these. Suggestions?

I just ran into this same issue with Starline 223R brass. Ended up throwing away almost half a bag of them. The rest shot great.

Even with 30 years of reloading experience, any chance you may have pushed the shoulders back too far, the case now moves in the chamber and the case gets pushed forward by the firing pin and you get FTF/soft strikes???
Me? I'd be looking at the easy stuff first. And on the FTF/soft strike rounds, maybe pull the bullets out to a JAM into the lands so the case doesn't move and stays pushed against the bolt face.
Once fired, make sure you're NOT moving the shoulders back too far and ending up with the same thing again. NEVER had a primer set too deep that I couldn't get it to go BANG. Might take a little work but I learned from my mistakes.
