Primer Question

Disclaimer: I am an old guy, 84, and will never use 5000 primers, really 10,000 because I need sm and lg. So I am looking for a 1000 of each.

Have always used CCI 400, 200, Br2 and Br4. Because of the shortage I am dropping back to CCI 200 and 400. I don't seem to find a reliable supplier that has both CCI 200 and 400 in stock at the same time and paying double hazmat is unproductive. Cost of components has reduced my shooting 90%.

Just how much difference is there between the different primer brands? Will I notice a significant accuracy/velocity change/POI change between CCI - Federal - Rem - Win? Is there really any difference? Did hear the Grinex ?? are larger, I don't want them.

Sometimes a change in primer will tighten up a load, or maybe do worse. Only way to find out is try a different primer, but then you are using up your components. I could help on the LRP's if you were closer as I don't have anything that requires them but have some on the shelf.

Differences can be massive depending on the load. I mostly tested small rifle in .223 over the years. I've seen velocity gains of 45 and about 100 fps on a simple primer substitution.

Group sized definitely can change too.

Lately, large rifle have been harder to come by, so the above is an option unless somebody else has a line on your CCI 200 or BR-2.

Sometimes primer brands make a difference, sometimes the load and tune doesn’t care. Only a test will tell for sure. If you aren’t too picky or if you don’t mind reworking your pet loads, then I would try a different primer If that is all I could find.

Check with Powder Valley Services, they have primers occasionally.

Frank, I am in the great state of NY and our local gun shops don't even stock components. And won't be stocking ammo much longer. (Sept 15 there will be a $2.50 NY NICS check to buy ammo) Last pound of RL 15 was $75.00 locally.
The great state of NY is an Oxymoron as a former resident born and raised there so I can say that. Why not reload? or do the state imperialists hamper that too?

NY resident as well. Our di*ckbag politicians are making good on their promises to sh*t on the constitution and our rights. They've actually made owning a firearm almost useless by making EVERYTHING associated with them impossible to possess. It's only a matter of time before reloaders are brought to the top if their pile.

In small pistol there can be a slight difference in fps... For instance S&B SPP are about 10 fps slower than an American primer ( federal , CCI , Winchester ) I pay no attention to any of it because I am not loading full power loads.... I have really never tested SRP for my 5.56/.223 loads because once again I am not loading a super fast load and the big 3 American primer manufacturers is all I have ever used.... Large rifle is the same I only use the big 3 but mainly federal match grade primers but in any of them of course testing just to see what accuracy was like is necessary BUT I wouldn't worry about any kind of over presser just because I changed from one of the other big 3 brands....

The only time I will back down is if I was to go to a magnum primer for some reason which I never have and once again I would rather see a slower load with good accuracy than a screaming hot one... I live in Texas and we don't shoot from one mountain to another.... So if we are just talking about shooting paper the bullet doesn't know if it's what factory speed is or 100 fps different... Exactly why I went today and retested my 9mm data with a new lab radar and it was different than what my old crono read.... I will update my data and move on to another caliber both pistol and rifle till I get all my data updated... Unfortunately right now you have to take what you can find , JUST for safety I would say retest if you changing primers.... I wouldn't and have switched between all of the big 3 without retesting and was just fine especially for pistol... I use whatever I have... BUT like I said I don't load hot loads....
