Primer question

Guys, need your input on primers. I'm shooting a Savage LRPV in 6 BR with a 1 in 12 twist. Presently using a 68 gr. Rubright BTHP, Lapua brass, 30 gr of H322 and Federal 205M primers. While a member of my local gun club, don't consider myself a competition shooter, just a recreational one. I have about 4000 Rem 7 1/2 BR primers that I use for my .222 and .223, but was thinking of using them as well for my 6BR. Just wondering if you fellows have any thoughts on this primer vs Fed 205 or CCI 450.

Robby,,,,,My advice is to load some and try them. I use them in my 6BR and 6 X 47 live varmint guns and like the way they perform. Back during the "primer shortage" I aquired a couple of thousand of them. There was a time back in the late 70,s and early 80's we all used them for short range bench rest.

I suspect you won't see much difference in them.

Good shooting
Larry

Thanks Larry,

That's what I'll do. I figure with amount of 7 1/2 I have, if they do work well I won't have to buy anything else for a while.

I shoot the same rifle..only in 1-8 tw..took a load off accurate shooter using remington 71/2..varget and 80 gr berger flat base..and never looked back..remington 71/2's have worked fine..it.s all i use in that load

Robby: I also bought Remington 7 1/2 primers during the primer "shortage" & recently used some. When I dumped them out of the box onto the primer tray, a large number of anvils fell out of the cups. Probably 20 out of the 50 that I dumped.

Not saying don't use them, just be aware of that possibility. I may have gotten a bad batch.

fdshuster: Wow. I never had any anvils fall out of my primers, or even heard of it ever happening. But I have to admit it got me to thinking. Enough so that I decided to see if I might encounter that kind of problem.

Well I dumped 50 primers out of a random box of my 4000 primer supply and got these results. The good news was no anvils came out of the primers. The bad news was that I now had to put them back in the box.

Anyway, looking forward to hopefully not having to buy primers for a while. Thanks for the advice guys.

I have several different calibers of rifles, a fairly good slection of powders and a large slection. One day acouple of years ago I just got courious about the difference in primers so I spent a day with several different rifles and I would load 5 rounds of the same load with each primer then crono them and group them. I did get 1 combo that showed some presure signs. This was with only 1 standard primer and there were 3 different Mag. primers with this load that did not. :o I found 1 load that with 3 different standard primers an 2 mag. primers that had an extrem spred of 17 fps. through the whole group. The only thing I could figure is that primers at differently with different powders. There really seemed to be no rime or reason to what I found.

I have been using them in everything from .223 and 6 br to mention a few, with great accuracy.I had a friend call me up a fair amount of years ago and said he had 8 boxes of 71/2 primers he wanted to give me for mee making him a new safety for a savage.I get there and he has 8000 of them and 1300 match bullets. The cost was right, free.I have been using the primers for 14 years.I still have some left and when I run out,I will get more of the same. You are good to go with the 7 1/2.

jon: As I said, they may have been a bad lot/batch. I've never had anvils fall out before either.

I liked them because of the thicker cups, and they always did have a very good record for accuracy. Could not find any difference between them & Federal 205's.
