primer pocket uniformer

I have this primer pocket uniformer that has an adjustable depth cutter, I guess it was set to factory specs, but I loosened the allen screw and made it a little deeper because for some cases it would not touch the bottom of the pocket. So I set it a little deeper and does the depth of the cut make any difference as long as its all cut the same depth?

The deeper the primer is seated in the pocket the further the firing pin will have to 'reach' to strike the primer. If seated too deep you will end up with a light pin strike, likely inconsistent or no primer ignition. My uniformer cuts just the outer ring of the pocket to keep the primer cup seating consistent; fired brass will tend to radius the bottom/wall junction of the pocket and the tool just squares it back. My tool does not cut from the base of the pocket other than the radius at the wall junction; my pocket 'floors' have residue in them after using the uniform tool and if it bothers me I use a brush or ss pin tumble the cases.

Another, potential problem with getting too deep a cut is that your primers may not seat all the way against the primer pocket wall if whatever you use to seat primers doesn't reach far enough to seat them against the primer pocket wall. And that could affect the forward flash of the primer and timing of the ignition.

Doesn't primers need to seated to the bottom ? Larry

Sure "seated to the bottom" is what you need. Otherwise the firing pin will try to do that, which could result in no ignition.
I go only as far as cleaning the pocket out and not removing ANY brass. My cleaning is only enough to ensure the primer can be seated all the way and not stopped by any remaining debris.

I uniform mine one time. Then I use a drywall screw to clean the pocket after. Larry

I just re-read my post and need to clarify- My uniformer (K&M) is endcutting and will cut the entire pocket bottom...if it is shallower than the set depth of the uniformer (I left it set as provided by K&M specific for a LR primer spec). Mine only cuts the periphery of the cases as the more central areas are not proud of the cutter depth (otherwise it would remove brass there too).

Thanks for the clarification, I'll readjust my cutter so it will barely scrape the bottom of the primer pocket on the new brass.
