Primer Pocket Tool

I'm looking to buy a new manual primer pocket tool. I have a Lyman tool and was considering a brush type. How well do they work and are they worth it. I see RCBS makes 1. I'd appreciate any input, I know it is not a costly tool, just wondering if it is worth getting.

I have both small an large, use'm all the time and I'm pretty content.
They do better than the plain scraper.

I have used all three types, RCBS brush, Dewey Crocogator, and a Lyman. They all work well on small rifle brass removing all traces of primer residue.

However, in my experience, unless the pockets are uniformed first (needs only to be done once) on large rifle brass, all three pocket cleaners leave a small amount of residue remaining in the pocket.

Sinclair states that their uniformer can also be used to clean the pockets. I haven't done this since I'm concerned about enlarging the pocket. Sinclair claims this cannot happen due to the design of their unifomer.

I tried the RCBS wire brush type, both small & large, used them for a while, and the wire bristles became worn and bent over, so they were no longer effective in cleaning up the corners. Switched to the Dewey Crocogater & after several years it's still as effective as when new. Amazing how much junk it will scrape out.

My suggestion is to purchase instead, the Sinclair Carbide Primer Pocket Uniformer, which will also do double duty as a Primer Pocket Cleaner. The best cleaner you'll ever find.

Use it with a handle or chuck in a portable drill for fast an Efficient Uniforming and/or Cleaning: http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=34720/Product/Sinclair-Primer-Pocket-Uniformers

Is it worth getting? Absolutely!

Excelent tool, I have both, Large and Small and use a powered screwdriver.

I do the same, but with a K&M uniformer. They used to supply their tool with a handle, but do not since the new owners took over.

I've been using the crocogator on all my Lapua small rifle primer pockets and otherwise they are left alone. On Winchester brass for my other rifles I use the Sinclair primer pocket uniformer on the cases when new and then a quick run after being fired just to clean them up also using my cordless drill, works very good. But I may be done with this chore as i just ordered a Hornady Magnum Sonic Cleaner which may save me some work but it may not, guess I'll find out by next weekend. :)

If you’re going to be doing small pocket Lapua brass you should get a tool made specifically for them. European specs are a little different than USA. Because of that many of the common pocket uniforming tools are too wide for the Lapua 6BR and 220 Russian. The Sinclair is permanently set for around a .125” deep cut that usually works great for the 6BR case. But sometimes you’ll find it isn’t deep enough to reach the bottom of all your new BR cases. Some tools allow for you to adjust the depth of cut so you can clean up the bottoms of all the cases from the start. But you have to be careful not to take them too deep. I think the K&M cuts to .130” or so(OOps that's the LR tool) and is a good alternative to the Sinclair. A depth mic is much better than the end of a calibers to accurately measure the pockets.

Contrary to what some are saying I’ve found my primer pockets will get shallower as the cases get fired. They change erratically early on with some changing more than others in the same lot. That is why some guys wait to do their pockets with the Sinclair tool till they have a firing or 2 on them. That way they almost always all clean up. Also the change in depth after firings is why many people use their primer pocket uniformer to clean and uniform after every firing instead of just cleaning the pocket. How much that shortens the safe useful life of a case, I don’t know.

Darrel Holland makes a nice scraper type double ended tool in stainless that works well. Mostly I use the carbide uniformer mounted in a blue anodized handle that was originally branded "Whitetail". Got mine from Russ Haydon.

This is where I stopped reading...I agree 110%. I have been using the Sinclair tools for years....just a 1/4 spin with your fingers to clean up fired brass after they have been uniformed. Can do 100 cases in under 5 min.
