PRIMER POCKET SWAGER

I am new to loading military brass. I am about to purchase a primer pocket swager.
Either a Dillon or an RCBS. Can some of you give me your opinions of the pros and cons on each of these. RCBS make one like the dillon and they also make one that mounts in the press.

Thanks

Forget the press type, its a pain to eject.Get the rcbs new model or dillon. I still find I have to take a chamfer tool to them when I am done to put a small chamfer on the primer pocket.

I have been using the $20 RCBS crimp remover, that cuts it out in my case prep center. I got this because the new RCBS swager was never in stock. It has been working great and do not plan on buying anything else.

If you do a search [ not easy for us sometimes ] you will find other posts about this.

I will put in my .01 worth. I use a small porting ball on my battery powered drill.

Then no matter how I do it I seem to have to use a small champher tool also. I use what we call a neck balm with the split end.

One of the things I am doing today.

Have fun

The Dillon Super Swage. Whatever comes next is way back, and a case of "buyer's remorse" just waiting to happen, if you ever get a chance to use the Dillon.

Get the Dillon and don't look back, I recently did three five gallon buckets of 5.56 military brass by hand without the Dillon Super Swage. My fingers have finally recovered from holding and pushing on all those cases. If you plan on doing large quantities of brass the Dillon is the way to go.

Forget any press mounted swager, they are slow and awkward.

If your only doing a few cases then the RCBS primer pocket reamer designed for their case prep station works well, BUT any hand type reaming tools and large amounts of brass is hard on the hands.

I made the mistake of buying the Hornady tool below and your hands and fingers will pay the price of holding all that brass and reaming the primer pockets.

I will say the RCBS reamer pictured below made for their case prep station is the "BEST" hand reamer for removing the crimp. "BUT" the Dillon is number one for ease of use and speed. ;)

Agree totally that the RCBS press swager is a total PIA to use especially if you're going to do a lot. There were no alternatives when I bought mine back in the late 70s and I wouldn't buy it again if I was looking for one today. Its Ok for just a few pieces, but other wise I'd avoid it

I quit using brass that has a primer pocket crimp.

Like the others say, get the Dillon. Con's ? Make sure the ram is lined up correctly or you'll make a primer pocket. I love mine.

enloe,
I use a lot of crimped brass! I have gotten brass from a friends 1050 that is swaged, off a super swage, and I have the press RCBS swage system. the dillons did ok but I still had to ream some times. I bought the "new" rcbs after a long back order wait. Nice device but still must presort by head stamp to be effective. You must adjust the madrel to the brand of brass, easy to do but if not done just right, you will ream. I have used the hornady and Lyman reaming tools. easy to use just don't stay sharp very long. especially the lyman. Then I go the RCBS attachment in the pictures provided by ed. finally pretty happy. mine it just shoved in the drill though since I don't have a "prep center".
so from worst to best:
RCBS press thing
RCBS new bench mount thing (pretty fast though) tie with Dillon stuff
Dillon swage thing (press or super swage)
lyman pocket reamer ( I had the wood handled ones)
Hornady thing (you can buy replacement bits cheap when they are in stock! just buy them not the handle thing and shove it in the drill)
the RCBS thing in the pics but I have not done a lot to be able to speak on how long it will stay sharp!!
and the first choice....
non crimped brass! (just too cheap when I have the crimped stuff to use up)
cheers,
doc
OBTW I just remembered that I have some swaging stuff for sale :o

I'e got the RCBS bench swager, I've never used a Dillon so I don't know if it better. Manny years ago I used a Lman cutter to cut out the crimp, I bought one and tried it but it didn't work at all. I got the felling that it wasn't cutting deep enough so I ground the end off a little. It work better but not 100 percent, if I could get the Lman tool to work as the first one did that I barrowed I wouldn't use anything else. I like the RCBS bench tool but it needs to be bolted to the table and I haven't don't it yet. It also has loss parts that can be lost, I like the RCBS tool but I can see room for improvement, though it produces a good finished product.

Lake City brass is very good "BUT" some of the Federal cases are pure junk, I had close to a 50% rejection rate of Federal cases due to loose primer pockets after the first firing. You will need to make a two inch rod that will fit inside the neck of the case and measure base web thickness and get rid of these cases.

Bottom line, if your shooting an AR15 the last thing you need is primer pockets leaking and primers falling into your trigger group jamming your AR. If all your cases are Federal I would check web thickness before buying any big dollar swager.

I have both the RCBS press unit and Dillon SuperSwager.

Given my druthers, I will go Blue 100 out of 100.
It is FASTER, easier, seems more consistent and you don't bend the rod on the dillon like I did multiple times on the green unit. Yes, RCBS was super about replacing my f---ups--- but still.

I bought the Dillon when I got 5k mil surp 5.56 and could not even think about using the old green unit.

No, I do not pray to the "Blue Idol" but in this case Dillon makes the superior unit.
Pay the money and don't look back if you have any quantity of cases to swage.

The Dillon makes a great swager.

A fellow on You Tube has even made it semi automatic using some stout rubber bands.

That probably makes it illegal here in California. ;)

I've used the original RCBS swedger (better than nothing for 223, but not by much), the Dillon swedger (much better), and the Wilson reamer with the Wilson case trimmer. If you already have a Wilson trimmer, or need a case trimmer, this is, IMHO, the only way to go. The RCBS bends shafts on a constant basis, and the Dillon distorts the case head. The Wilson trims the entry to the pocket, and smooths it at the same time. Primers go in like butter, and you ain't distorted the case head. It is idiot-proof, which is why I need to use it.

Can you use the Wilson cutter in a hand held drill? If so what part number would I need? If not what would be 2nd best ?

thanks Link

No, it isn't something that will work by itself. The primer pocket reamer replaces the cutter on the trimmer. This link will explain better than I could. If you are using a hand trimmer for cases, and it ISN't a Wilson, your necks aren't being cut as consistantly and squarely as they could be. So consider going to the Wilson setup and killing 2 birds with one stone.

If you need something to work by itself, with a power tool, I would use the cutter from 21st Century Shooting:
