Primer pocket pits

Hi All

Need your advice on this. I've noticed on my 6XC cases that I've reloaded the most (10X,+), that I'm starting to see "pits" in the brass at the flash hole, in the primer pocket *see attached picture*.
Is this a problem ?? They are not deep and still lots of brass under them. Will it cause problems in the future? How will this effect accuracy, if at all?
I've been using CCI 250 magnum large rifle primers. Should I switch to regular large rifle primers.?
All advice is welcome.
Gina

Gina, Primers are nasty! You should see my Encore 209 ML'er breechplug after 15 rds. As long as it does not affect your primer seating depth or the diameter of the flash hole isn't enlarged I don't think you'll have a problem, JMHO. If either of these things happen it may be time to retire them as at 10+ firings they don't owe you anything, again JMHO

Maybe your primer hole is getting dinged up by your decapping pin? The dings are facing downward....just like they would if the decapping pin is striking it. If the primer was causing the damage, wouldn't the etching marks be facing in towards the case? Another sign (to me) that it might be the decapping pin is the marks are shiny(not sooty)....indicating they were made after firing? That's my guess and I"d take a careful look at your decapping pin for brass marks.

There was another guy that recently posted this exact problem, and it turned out to be a slightly bent decapping assembly that was hitting the side of the flash hole and chipping the edge... he straightened it and the problem went away.

I have cases that I have fired so many times that I have lost count - and the flash holes are fine.
