Primer pocket depth for 6br?

ive been reloading for about 4 years now and i just had a question jump into my mind because ive never really read much about the topic, and i want to know if im making a mistake.

i have a primer pocket uniformer that is adjustable for cutting depth (locking slide ring). when i set it, i simply took a piece of brass and slowly cut the pocket until it had removed just enough brass to give a full clean cut out of the bottom, then i used that depth to set my tool

I then cut about 50 cases and checked to see if they were all getting a nice clean surface. Everything seems to have worked out fine. I just started loading for my newly barreled Rem 700 in 6br, and i know there has to be a saami spec for primer pocket depth (ive actually never seen or heard one though), so im wanting to make sure im not going to mess up my Lapua brass.

So, how deep do you guys cut your pockets when you uniform them?

FYI, i have deburred the flash holes, but i know better than to ream them....

thanks guys,
Jeremy

Jeremy,

Generally primer pocket reamers come already set up, at least from Sinclair they do. Now to your question. Assuming you are hand priming and you know what the feel is of a properly seated primer, the primer face should be about .003" to .005" below the face of the cartridge. And remember, consistancy counts.

I use the Sinclair Uniformer: http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=34720/Product/Sinclair_Primer_Pocket_Uniformers

With the Sinclair 8000 Series Primer Pocket Uniformers the proper seating depth below the face of the cartridge head is already built in. No need to adjust anything. I simply chuck the Uniformer into a portable drill and have at it. I also use the Uniformer for cleaning primer pockets during reloading. No need for a separate tool for that task. I like keeping things simple.

Jeremy,

Ditto on what Outdoorsman said here, but I'll add one thing; Sinclair carries a special uniformer specifically for Lapua and Norma primer pockets, which tend to be just slightly deeper than most US makes. Their (Sinclair's) stock number is #UN-8006 for the "PPC/BR Uniformer - Lapua and Norma brass only."

As he mentioned, the cutters are set and non-adjustable. No need for any adjustment, and this prevents the possibility of a mistake screwing up good brass by cutting the pockets too deeply.

Since I use only Lapua brass, for both my 6PPC [220 Russian necked up] and 30BR [6mmBR necked up], the Sinclair #UN-8006 is all I ever need.

Just measure your primer and check the depth with a caliper(they all have a depth probe ground into them at the end of the slide) It is that easy.I like them below flush.

When using Lapua I don't mess with the primer pockets, use them "as-is". Have never had a problem with 222, 223, 220 Russian, 6BR & 308. Why "fix" something that's not broke? Primer pockets are kept clean with the Dewey Crocogator, Sinclair 2010-B catalog, page 15, $6.95.

well now that i know the sinclair tool has a deeper cut, im not worried that i cut the pockets too deep since i didnt change the tool after i set it for my 223 primer pockets.

and even though i dont need to mess with a good thing on the lapua brass, i do like to use the uniformer to remove the carbon.
