Primer flash hole size

I just finished reloading some R-P nickel cases for my .222 without any problems. I then attempted to reload some once fired Herters cases. While resizing the first case the decapping pin stuck in the flash hole and I had to cut the case to retrieve the pin. I might add these are RCBS dies. Anyway, back to reloading and the second case resulted in another stuck pin. Upon examination, I discovered the decapping assy uses the large (.080) decapping pin. This worked fine in my LC .223 cases and the R-P nickel. Seems the Herters cases have to be de-capped with the small (.070) pin. The big question I have is this: how does the primer flash hole size affect performance and especially pressures? Is this cause for concern?

There is a school of thought that supports the smaller flash hole as being a better way of igniting powder, when trying for ultimate accuracy. You will find that both Lapua and Norma cut smaller flash holes in certain cases they make for sale to BR shooters.

The idea is that a smaller ignition flame translates to a smoother more vibration free start pressure and enhanced accuracy.

These are older Herters' cases and I have been told the older cases were manufactured by Norma. As long as there are no pressure issues, I see no reason not to use them.

Killim,

RCBS sells decapping pins in both .080" and .060" sizes. You should be able to order a few of the smaller pins through any dealer who carries the RCBS line, and that will take care of the problem. As has been mentioned, we produce several cases that use the smaller diameter flash hole, specifically on those cartridges where accuracy is the primary concern; 6mm BR, 220 Russian (6mm PPC), 6.5x47, etc..
