Primer differences/interchangeability

Hello gents,

I recently got into reloading and I'm getting great results, but I had a couple questions that I just can't seem to get a straight answer for online.

1. Primer differences
Aside from physical dimensions. What are the practical differences between rifle and pistol primers, and how do magnum primers differ?

2. Magnum vs Non-magnum
I have read that my choice of powder influences what primer type I should use more than whether or not the cartridge is designated as a magnum cartridge. How much truth is there to that claim, and how do I know when magnum primers are required/recommended?

3. Interchangeability
Provided the primer fits properly in the primer pocket and I don't really care about accuracy at this time. How interchangeable are pistol/rifle/magnum primers?

If it's helpful, I'm am asking in order to reload for my new .357 Mag. lever gun.

Thanks

Starting out reloading you should get a good reloading manual and use the primer type listed only changing within the types (i.e. small rifle / smal rifle). The book will specify magnum or not.

Grumpy,

Here's a sort of primer on primers... you'll have to copy & paste the address as it comes up as an error.
