Primer difference

Wanted to share what I found using different primers. I have a 22-250 with a new Krieger barrel 1-12 tw with a Mauser-98. All bullets were Nosler 55gr BK Spitzer. Powder, IMR4064 33.2 gr. Lapua brass with necks skimmed. All shot at 200 yds off bench with no wind. Never thought I would see this much difference in the 3 different types primers I used. 1st group-WLR, 2nd group-cci-200, 3rd group-BR-2. The first 3 went in one ragged hole, the 4th I think was my front bag (shot low) & 5th went back into group.

If that shocked you, shoot them over a chrono and look at the differences in the ES and SD numbers. Primers make all the difference in the world. I've yet to see a WIN primer ever out shoot/perform a CCI or Federal though....to the point I'm about out of them and I won't restock.

I have gone to CCI BR primers and will never go back to a mixture of primers in my stock. Like Judd said .... changing primers DOES make a difference on most all loads that I have used. Not all ..... but most.

I have never done a test of primers. Thanks for sharing this. I have been using BR2's for a couple of years since cannot find 210M.

Many matches have been won with Winchester SR primers. I use them now in a 22Waldog and 6PPC. I cannot tell the difference between them and Federal 205 and/or 205Ms.

I thought there would be a difference to, but not this much. I do plan to shoot over a chromo, just not enough time today. Also want to try a berger 55gr or 52gr match.
JohnKielly, these were 5 shot groups.

I have come to the conclusion that primer testing is a very important part of load development, just not sure when. Recently, I have been testing different primers as the last step, right behind powder preference and amount. You may be amazed at how much it can change things

Although as a 1000yd benchrest shooter I have not personally loaded any yet.
I have been hearing ALOT of good things about the wolf primers and low es.
A fellow competitor shoot a 7wsm and he says they out performed all the top names.
Gotta try them for myself and see if they work better than my 210m and cci br2.

I am a Palma and 1000 Prone shooter for 30 + years.
On Winchester the Old White Box Primers where VG. The Blue Box are Baster primers.
I ran a test three years ago on the Long Range Forum .
this was with .308 Win. Brass 155 gr. Sierra Palma bullet .
Fed. 210 M , Wolf LR , Wolf LRM and Tula LRM.
The lowest SD was Wolf LR ! 2nd was Tula LRM. IN the Wolf and Tula Primer in LRM the cups are just harder.

Ran a test with my 6BR CCI 450, Fed205M & Wolf SRM ( the ones AR shooter love)

Wolf came in #1 in that test also.

To Bad we can't get Wolf Primers ???

Good Shooting,
Don

The reason i arrived at 33.2gr is because as i worked up from 31.5, i got to 33.3 & started getting ejection rubs on the cases. No stiff bolt lift though, & no flattened
primers. Kinda baffled over this. Would like to work up further but hesitated. Anyone
ever have this happen???

I guess my question is which primer did you do your load workout with? If you did it with one but tested 2 other primers with that load, it would mean you optimized your load with one primer but expect the other two to shoot just as great, that sounds a little like stacking your deck a bit?

A proper primer test would be to optimize load for each of the 3 primers and see which one has the best load?

I did the load work up with the WLR & trying to save barrel life I tried the other two, being i was at a mild load. I was going to rework the load with the BR-2 since it showed improvement. I'm
not sure how to check the ejector/bolt face regarding the ejector rubs. Thanks for the replies.

By pushing it in and seeing if it will go past bolt face. Matt

Thanks, I always appreciate it when forum members share their testing results. It reemphasizes to me to never to get to comfortable with my load development. As you already know or are finding out is that everything matters and must be tested.

Good Shooting

I've seen bolt faces in the lathe being cleaned up. Sometimes, there are high-spots around the ejector hole that causes this, especially with AR-15 bolt faces but with Remington bolt faces too.
