Primer Depth Accuracy Range

What is your primer depth accuracy range? I have been seating my primers to a range of between .010”-.013” per my Holland micrometer depth gauge. I’m using the RCBS bench seater w/Holland add on feeder/lever system which works splendidly. I clean the pockets every time with a K&M tool and getting excellent results at 1,000 yards:598-28x at our last club match. I check each case for depth to ensure they are at least .010” deep.
Rifle: Eliseo Tube gun chassis w/pickle fork fore-end, Borden Tubegun action, Brux bbl, .284 Win, Vortex GE.

With Hollands tool even with uniformed pockets your accuracy will be dependent on rim thickness.
Can you measure rim thickness? .003 leaves room to improve imo. Good shooting.
Lapua brass, how do you improve on that? My point being, prmr. Depth is not as important or finicky for my set up. My calipers show .0515”-.052” variance.

That can’t be correct are you sure your calipers function properly?… calipers aren’t the best tool for the job but if held perfectly the same each time should yield better results than that.

There has been a couple good articles here about this subject.
First, make sure your primer pocket depths are all uniformed
and the same depth.
Measure the depth of the primer pockets, then measure the primers
your using and subtract the two.
Then run them .002 or more below flush.
Make sure your primers are at least in contact with the bottom of the pocket
and below flush.

Anyone have an answer for my original question? I’m experiencing very acceptable results with the range of primer seating depth I have described…at 1K yards.

.0005” isn’t good enough? Tough crowd. That is my rim thickness variance btw.

When worded like this I see .0515 to .052 variance which is huge! Now if you said all my readings are .0515-.052 then that’s a small variance that most can’t measure with a caliper that close. Good luck with your endeavors.

Your original post show .010 to .013, perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying. I was assuming you were having a .003 variance in seated primer depth below the case rim. If you can keep the with crush within .0005 of each other. I would say that is more than sufficient.

Well your results are certainly good. Believe the target is the phrase I hear over and over. Silly me seats primers till they stop:oops:

I seat to the bottom of the pocket. Nothing to measure. This makes sure all the FP force is used to set off the primer. No pushing the cup forward.

Just shot 598-34x at 600 for MW on Saturday with my seating depth range: .010"-.013". The 2-9's were bad shots. I knew as soon as I let them go...trying a new rear bag set up.

When I started drag racing I had a temperature gauge for the transmission and every pass the temp would bother me so I asked my transmission guy about it. His answer...if the trans temp bothers you take the gauge out, so I did and it hasn't bothered me since :0)
I seat primers until they stop and I can't outshoot the ammo I make so I don't worry about it.
