Price check on custom picatinny rail?

I just finished a picatinny rail for a local friend. I started with a Nightforce gunsmiths rail blank (link below). I machined it to fit a Sako L61R. My friend wanted to leave the original Sako dovetail mounting alone. So I had to mount the rail ontop of that.

The following was done....

1. Action removed from barrel, cleaned and decreased.

2. I then machined a custom truing rod, one that would fit both ends of the bolt raceway (different from one end to the other) so I could dial the action in parallel in the mill. Making sure the action was level across the top also.

3. I then figured the bolt spacing and machined that into the receiver. 8-40 threads.

4. I dialed in the rail blank and machined the underside, removing .250 from the bottom to bring the rail down in thickness, keeping the 20 moa in the rail. Then I machined one step down from there on both sides to create a "recoil lug" if you will that dropped down into the port area.

5. I flipped the rail over and setup on the flats I had milled. Dialed the rail in, and machined the same bolt spacing into the rail. Drilling, counterboring and chamfering.

6. I then installed the rail. Modified the screws for length. With the the action and rail together I set it up in a sine vise and milled an 8 deg angle into the ejection port area on the rail.

7. I disassembled everything, cleaned and reinstalled the barrel, Checked headspace and then installed the rail.

So..... I told you all of this to ask what would you charge a customer for something like that. A set rate or an hourly shop rate? Just a ballpark idea based off what you think it would take you to do the same.

I'd probably just do a set rate. The price would be how good of a friend he was. I'm sure it's a good 200 dollar job for a none friend

He'll sorry there JRS! It was a guess as I've never done that one before. Seems time goes buy fast on one off jobs . If I think something will take a hr you can bet it will be three. If I was going to do that for a friend it would be free.

I've done a lot of custom rails from blank rail stock. Most came in at $250-$375 depending on the details. Not only did I never have anyone complain but most were really happy campers to even get a rail for whatever odd ball project it was. My machine shop rate it $75 per hour.

I paid $135.00 for a custom made picatinny rail.
I just paid $145 for one for one of my Nesika's but it came off a CNC, not a Bridgeport :-) Nothing unreasonable about time and materials for any job.
