Bullet pressure

I know in advance that each barrel, load, powder make a differbyence in load pressure, but was wondering if anyone here has tested different brands of bullets in the same weight range (+/- 3.0gr) with the same load. With the Berger's 105gr hybrid, 109gr hybrid, and even the 108gr becoming unobtainium, I have bought alternatives in case they are needed in my Dashers. I have Hornady 108 ELDM's, Hornady 105gr hpbt, as well as some V-tac103's. Looking at stockpiling some Sierra 107's just in case... not looking for an absolute , definitive test, just personal experience...thanks for any input....rsbhunter

Is pressure that important? Certainly when it is too high( and possibly too low), but within the parameters of the brass/rifle?

You will certainly need to find the velocity node for each bullet/powder combination, looking for the usual pressure signs, but otherwise, it's pretty academic - and I do not know any way of correlating pressure with performance and accuracy without a substantial amount of equipment.

Thank you, I guess I was overthiinking it. I don't run at even near max loads, so I don't think I would be close to pressure . I guess if the shortage of supplies continues, I'll just shoot what's available...rsbhunter

I agree 100%. As I said, li run honest medium of the road charges, saving $700.00+ barrels is more important than an extra 150 or so fps. I don't run at jam, or even into lands... I do test if I'm changing something major, or even minor concerning powder charge, case capacity. Hopefully the faucets start to open on the component market, and we can order as needed?...I'm grateful for the responses, and always appreciate the input from everyone here..?rsbhunter

I’ve had older custom bullets with different pressure ring diameter’s than a newer batch that built pressure a bit sooner and wanted a different bushing size.

Well, I'm keeping all the options open...I actually had fate smile on me and bought 500 Berger 105 hybrids from a REALLY nice member here....sometimes your the windshield, sometimes your the bug !! rsbhunter

I don’t know what you are using them for but I would recommend you get your name on the list for the Roy Hunter 103’s (now produced by Alex Wheeler) and Vapor Trail 103’s. The lead times aren’t that bad. Bart Sauter has some good options too.

Dave.

I have some V-Tacs 103 gr. They are an awesome bullet, and I just need to bite the bullet (pun intended) and drop $500.00 + to get a thousand of what is available....rsbhunter

I have no problem using Sierra 107's , I shoot with guys that use them, and win. I just started using Bergers years back, and they worked very well in all the calibers I had. Even Hornady with the eldm's are getting alot of positive accuracy reviews..Alot depends on which discipline of shooting you do, and requirements. I am not a serious competition shooter, just local matches. rsbhunter

Back to op's original question, QuickLoad will adjust pressure predictions based on bullet design. Yesterday I was cleaning out some cats and dogs and used QL to come up with a load for my 6 mm Grendel. It predicted the pressure of the 87 grain Hornady BTHP to be less than the same load of VV-N530 under the 87 grain V-Max by ~1/2 grain of powder when loaded to the sa e length.
I don't know how QL comes up with their numbers, but I have found it to be a good sanity check when approaching near max loads.

Thank you. That is what I was looking for. I know max load number's are ALWAYS a danger zone, so anymore I load mid level loads only. I'm not planning to change bullets, but in today's market, not changing isn't always an option...Thanks again. rsbhunter

I believe what will cause various pressures with a given bullet of the same weight, is mostly due to the bearing surface of each bullet.
So, when and if you change a bullet brand, that bearing surface will be a factor and you should reduce your powder charge slightly and work up with the different bullet you are trying.

Hornady bullets 105 match have a longer bearing surface, I've tried running the same load as 105 hyb and got heavy bolt lift, so I had to drop the charge, if this helps

Yes, it does help! I run that bullet in my 243 LBC ar15. It may come to where I have to use these for the bolt guns. Another example of the knowledge that is given so freely on this forum. Thank you all....rsbhunter

The Little 90 gr target Bergers are really fun to shoot, and they shoot very very good in all my 6mm barrels, I shoot them as confidence builders and they do the job, very accurate little bullet imho
