Prepping brass ahead of time before loading it

6MM PPC (.262 neck) ammo loaded for me by the rifle builder in the early 80s chambered and shot with unbelievable accuracy. Took the rifle and remaining loaded cartridges out a couple of months ago and it would not chamber (bolt would not close). It looks as though the cartridges somehow changed dimensions over the years. Haven't the slightest clue as to what might have caused that.
Any thoughts~??????

I know this question has been asked and brought up a couple of times but wanted to see if anybody's done any real testing on it

How long can you leave a size case prepped and ready to load before you need to load it, that has any major effect on accuracy

I am using some three time fired BH .308 brass I sized prepped and primed about 15 years ago and bagged it in ziplocks. Loads just as accurate ammo as it did then. I use it for long range precision rifle competitions. Have shot my 176 ATips to 1240 yards accurately in matches.

There is a lot of voodoo in this sport. Prepped/sized brass will sit there until you need it and be the same as when you prepped/sized it. If you prime it then treat it as you treat your primers and you will be fine.

Have over 600 cases fully prepped and ready to load sitting ready . The only thing I do before loading is run a expander in the necks the night before , and load the next day . I have seen no differences in scores for TR doing this .

Because Brass has a memory , and it will try to return to it's previous shape and size . If cases sit for a extended period , just run a expander through them and see what you get . Many , but not all cases will have changed the inside dimension , if only by tenths , but that WILL have a effect on neck interference .
Thirty-five years of Aerospace Tool and Die did teach me a little about metals , and their reactions to changes in temperature and humidity .

Ok as I have not found that it’s needed but if you feel it’s needed keep on doing it.

Not trying to start a debate on the issue , and I don't "feel" it's needed to be more accurate . I have proven it is a good way to do it , since my S/D numbers run between 4.2 and 6.2 . That alone tells me my neck interference is very consistent , along with consistent and close velocities . And the fairly High scores I shoot , on a very tough Range .
I don't say everyone should do it this way , but I'm going to continue doing it , as it works for me , as I just won the Az. State Mid-Range 600 F-TR on Friday .

Like I said if it works for you then do it. I get single digit SDs also in those ranges without doing it and why I don’t. Congrats on the win.

As long as you brush ID of neck right before loading you won’t see any down side to in regard to how long it sat sized before use…. I like aged brass actually..

I have over 1500 cases prepped in 4 different calibers!!! Started them before having kids!! Now, 30 years later, now retired, I'm going to finish what I started!! The wife and I decided to pay off the mortgage before staring a family!!! Everything looks the same, except for the dust on them!!! I'll report back later!!! I'm an engineer, I doubt any change have occurred from prepping 30 years ago!!! Don't see any noticeable oxidation from storing in a low humidity and constant temperature environment!!! And, with constant temp, no work hardening can occur!!! THERMODYNAMICS!!! But, I will have to pull over 250 test loads due to electrolysis!! I know, without looking, this has occurred!!!!

How do I know!!! Simple!! I had reloaded some 270 Wins over 45 years ago!! When I retired, I cleaned up and got rid of the storage area!!! Came across the 3 -50 count plastic boxes and opened them up!!! With the double based powder, the Nitroglycerin dissolved the brass!! Some bullets, with the neck brass, were setting in shoulder less cases!! Those 120 rounds ended up in the trash!!! Hoping the 25-06, 30-06, 22-250, 7-08, and 6.5x55 will survive filled with single base powders assembled at max, 35 Years ago!!! The rifles look great (no rust or corrosion from finger print oils) after sitting around with a heavy Rem Oil coating!! Only the Rem, 1100 Mag Shotgun did not survive the long term storage!!! The rust spots were finger prints!!!
