Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #8

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane

With N150 I was shooting the 105 Scenars and 105 Berger Boattails. In BOTH cases, the bullets liked 30.4grs... With N540, I was shooting the THEN BRAND NEW Berger 108gr. That bullet LOVED (I believe the charge was) 30.6grs of it. To be T-Totally honest, when it was not BROILING down here, N150 was THEE MOST ACCURATE powder I have ever tried in a 6mmBR..

I have never used either in a Dasher, although I have NO DOUBT they would work..

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #5

Well I took the Shehane out this morning... Nice, relatively "cool", over cast and no wind! Perfect for load development and Chrono"ing".. Well I am very pleased.. I did a ladder test on seating depths that went from 10K off to 30K off AND I did something I do not normally do. I changed MORE than one thing! I had been using Fed 210GMs and no matter what load, I was always getting 15-17e.s.'s.. So, along with the seating depth tests, I also changed primers to CCI BR-2's... Well that proved to be very beneficial, my E.S.'s went down to 9-11 ft/sec. spreads, from 2896 to 2907F.P.S.... But the GREATEST news was at 10K off I shot a 5 shot group of 9/16th of an inch, I believe that translates to .562"... So now armed with that load (57.0grs of H4831 / Berger 180 Hybrids seated 10K off and CCI BR-2"s) I will go to 1000 yards some time next week and see what she will do out there! IF it does what I believe it will, there will be just one more "UPDATE".. It will be to bring y'all up to speed on what transpired>>> Then it will be out to 1000 yards in May at our next 1000yard F-Class shoot at Bayou Rifles..

I hope this thread has helped some people and I know, y'all have helped me! One more stop>>hopefully!!

Cool! sounds like you may have it tuned in nicely. Let us know how it shoots at 1k.

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #5

I shoot the 284 Shehane with a 40 degree shoulder, I call it a 284 JC and Dave kiff has the prints...H4831sc 56.5 grains for 2915 fps with the Berger 180 hybrid...a decent load, easy on primer pockets...after 1,700 rounds it still puts five shots under 2 inches at 600 yards if I do my part. One thing to pay attention to is bullet seating pressure...I use a K&M arbor press with beville washers and a dial indicator. Sort your loaded cartridges by seat pressure for groups. Bullets seated .015 into lands and Federal 210 primer. I believe H4831sc and H4831 shoot a little different, I prefer the short cut. I also find the Bullet have .015" difference in lenght so I do sort them.

Hi Jeff! Your 284 JC sound exactly like a 7mmWalker... Mark Walker on here developed what sounds like the exact same thing!

I don't have an Arbor press with a dial indicator for the pressure on bullet seating, however, I can feel the differences. Any variation(s) go into a pile for "sighting in / practice"... I do this will all my calibers..

I have not, as yet, got into bullet sorting. I still shoot for fun and right now, that would not keep things fun... Maybe one day BUT not today... I know, I know, you get out of it what you put into it... T-Rust me, I know that..

However, I want to thank you for your input and I am quite sure, others do too...

I don't know how all the italics got in there>> oh well... sorry guys..

.284 Ackley Improved would be the same thing.

I measured case capacity between the .284 (AI, Walker, JC) and there was an average if .5 gr. H2O difference between the two. So it appears the only difference is the shoulder angle. Performance is the same, and they do shoot! ;)

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #6

Well here is the results for 1000 yards... The day was very good for shooting>>> a bit sunny for my tastes BUT very little wind. I was using 57.0grs of H4831, CCI BR-2's, Berger 180 Hybrids seated 10K OFF the lands. Speed is right at 2900 and e.s.'s were running in the 9-11f.p.s. range.

Results: VERTICAL!!! I got a S-O-L-I-D 10" of vertical out there on a "almost no wind day"! Now I ask you, HOW do you get that kind of vertical with 9-11f.p.s. E.S.'s?? If I would have shot my 6.5 x 47 OR my 6 Dasher out there this morning, I would have pounded the "X" ring to death! Neither one of them have any or much better E.S.'s than the Shehane... This one has me stumped.. At any rate, I am going to have to re-group and figure this one out..

So folks, this is the last "UPDATE" for this thread... I appreciate all the interest and the PM's >> everything.. You're a GREAT bunch.. You guys are why this forum is the best of the best>>>period!!

Erik, I will give you a shout later>>>we can deduce what my target(s) are telling me...

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #6

ES only matters if the gun is tuned. Sounds like your not quite there. I have had barrels shoot good at 100 or 300 with good es give vertical at 1k. Don't know why. I like to do my tuning at the range I am going to shoot if possible. Other guys make it work, and it has worked for me too on some barrels but not all.

Well I sure thought that a 5 shot, 0.562, 300 yard group with 9-11 e.s.'s would do pretty well at 1000... This is an eye opener for me.. But I know me and now I will pull out the stops and get to the bottom of this and get it ready for May's 1000 yard match...

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #6

Ya I though you had it too. Did you have a tail wind or bad mirage? Was the temperature the same as when you shot at 300? You would not be the first to have this problem. :D

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #6

Yeah don't drop it here...inquiring minds want to know what fixes it.

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #6

As I understand, 180 gr Bergers in a 30" barrel (7mm) have a sweet spot at around 2830 fps. You are at 2900 fps, way away from the natural sweet spot. Unless, you are using a tuner,

I now have 60 rounds down my new 284 WIN barrel with a tuner. I am using hBN so my velocities are a bit low but with 55.0 gr of H4831sc I am getting 2805 avg fps. Compared to my 6BRX not very good SD and ES, but I haven't got my inline seater or neck sizer yet. I'm saddled with an old, used die set! I do have precise control of charge weight with a lab std balance.

I found a node at 600 yd ( it will be different at 1000yd) with my tuner giving me 2" groups. I am pleased with my new barrel so far!

The reason I didn't go for a Shehan with more MV capacity was I determined that wind cheating was pretty much the same with these good bullets at 2800 fps being about the same as 2900 fps. the difference in MV is only 4% but the difference in tuning is infinity!

I would try a load that gives you 2830 fps , maybe 15 rounds, and see what happens at 1000 yds. You will get longer barrel life as well!

Bullets don't have sweet spots. Many things influence where a barrel will tune.

No mirage, VERY little wind in ANY direction... Cool"ish" >> about the same as when load developing.. It is one of those "head-scratchers".. I had a near perfect day.... Oh well, I will figure it out...

Re: Preliminary results on my .284 Shehane #6

Ben,

Take this for what it is worth, but I didn't get rid of my vertical in my Shehane until I got up to 57.8-58.2g of H4831SC. I got rid of my vertical at a velocity of 2835-2955fps with the Hybrids. I am on 8 reloads on the cases, so do not feel I am at high pressure and I am having good case life.

My thoughts only, but you might want to push it up a bit.

KY, I was down the "H4831 Road" with my 6.5 x 284 and destroyed brass when I was only "near max".. That's why I went with H1000 AND why I tried to get going with H1000 in the Shehane. The "Max Load" according to Hodgdon with the STRAIGHT .284 using 175 "hunting" bullets which probably have a longer bearing surface than the 180Hybrids, is 57.0grs.. I know that the Shehane has about 3.3grs more capacity>>>however, when I was loading the 6.5 x 284 with H4831, I was UNDER max and opening up primer pockets. I went up to 57.3grs (in the Shehane) with my "fouling rounds" using H4831 and got a slightly heavy bolt lift>>> not bad and the accuracy was pretty much the same.. So since my accuracy was really good at 57.0, I decided to stay there.

I am convinced that if I went up to the loads you are doing great with, I would not only have a sticky bolt, it might have to be taken to my gunsmith>> I don't know>>> but I do know that 57.3 was at "my" max in my rifle..
You can be assured of one thing, I will make this work and it will work excellently before I am done...

Thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated..
