Prefit savage barrel

+1...... I have Criterion (CBI) & McGowen, both used for Varminting. Easy clean up & break-in. Excellent grouping. Both are quality products IMHO........ You can't find a better guy to deal with than Jim @ Northland shooter Supply........... Assuming you're talking Savage but he also handles Rem. pre-fit

I'd choose Pac Nor....they will build exactly what you want....

CBI barrels off the shelf don't have options I like...

But would be my 2nd choice..expect a long wait from either

I have a chrome moly Shilen pre-fit in 7mm rem mag with a varmint contour and it shoots amazing but it does seem hard to clean. It could be that i did not break it in correctly, i don't know. After buying the shilen I met and spent a lot of time talking with the owner of McGowen barrels and he assured me that every barrel they sell is select match grade and fully hand lapped before it leaves the factory. If i ever build another savage it will wear a McGowen barrel. By the way if you go to McGowenoutlet.com they have a bunch of pre-fit savage barrels in stock ready to ship.

What is the most accurate prefit barrel avail.

Mine. But you can't have it.

CBI, Shilen and McGowen all have good reputations and most people who have owned each will tell you none of the three build a better barrel than the other, as a rule.

Decide what you want, see what is available off the rack. If it is not avail, look into ordering a prefit to your specifics. I know McGowen will turn to other company's tapers, etc. and will cut to length before turning. They are all about the same price, as well. JMHO

Bought a prefit 6.5-284 from PacNor and it was a POS. Sent it back for exam, they said it was OK. Sold it after 300 rounds.

CBI is looking good for me right now. Just finished break in and it cleans easy and isn't fouling at all YET. Shows good potential so far

IIRC Shilen and CBI and McGowen will do pre fit for you with your reamer if you send it in to them for no extra charge. Wait time will be a few months but might be worth the investment of a reamer if you plan to shoot the same caliber. A $340 pre fit is a lot less expensive than $615 for a custom barrel/chamber job

IIRC, Jim Briggs told me there would be a setup charge for CBI to use your reamer.

There is a small setup fee for that I was told. 40 or 50 bucks maybe? But he did say 1 barrel or ten barrels it was the same one charge if its the same reamer. This would be good for the volume guys that want 2 at a time. From the experience I have had I would hands down take a cbi over a mcgowan or the others mentioned as far as that goes. This is my experience yours could vary. And Jim is a great person to deal with to top that off. Matt
