Prefit Pac-Nor Barrel Ordering Questions

Gold $$ Contributor
I want to order a Pac-Nor prefit barrel for a small shank Savage in 6mmBR Norma.
Background;
After investigating for way to long. What I “think” I want turns out to be almost identical to the barrel on Gun of the Week #36. I sent Pac-Nor an E-mail, with Gun of the Week Link, asking if it could be that simple. No sense re-inventing the wheel. Reply was 1.055” barrel is the largest. Need to know what bullets range you intend to shoot.
Thinking Pac-Nor is trying to protect me from myself,probably a good thing). I ordered 100 Lapua cases and a Wilson seater. I plan on loading some dummy rounds, set to about the same OAL with a Sinclair comparator, and send them off to Pac-Nor.

Questions;
1. When you get a new prefit barrel from Pac-Nor do you receive any detailed information on the chamber?
2. Are all contours for Savage prefit barrels custom,+$35) because of shank dia.
3. Should I send the dummy rounds to PT&G instead and get a reamer made?
4. Buy different barrel,Hart,Krieger,Shilen, etc) and find a gunsmith to chamber, thread and crown?

What I “Think” I want;
Pac-Nor SMSS, 3 groove, 8T, #7 straight taper, .272 no-turn neck, 27”, .065-.073 throat,as on a PT&G print)

I’m a little paranoid anymore. I really don’t want to go though another strange chambered rifle again! Sorry I got so long winded. Any information/input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Richard

Check out the Pac Nor Web site, and write all your info down. Measure
your barrel threads. Should be 1.055 ??? There can only be two sizes,
and I think the larger size is rare? Get your info together and call them.
They are going to make it the way you tell them, and if you tell them wrong you are going to be out a lot of money. Take your time!!:thumb:

I'd go with longer freebore, i.e. .110", if this is an 8-twist and you're planning to shoot the long bullets primarily. If you want to shoot everything, an .080" freebore is fine.

Re taper, I have a 27" and specified it as .90" at the muzzle. That works very well and will be a little lighter than a straight taper.

This is also somewhat controversial, but there are some engineers who believe that a tapering blank may have some advantages in terms of the way it vibrates vs. a uniform contour.

Wow, how lucky can I get! Replies from 2/3 of the gentleman with Savage “Guns of the Week”. There’s great information in those well done articles. The rifle I’m putting together is very similar. Coincidence? I think not!

Moderator, Maybe I should rethink the freebore and twist. There were four reasons I thought this would be a good freebore twist compromise.
1. Probably 70%+ will be varmint type use,75 gr V-Max, 68 gr MEF, etc.). But, I also would like to try some long range shooting. Hoping Berger 95 gr VLDs or 90 gr Scenar would shoot OK. I could get some good practice doping the persistent wind up here.
2. The “Do it all” reamer 0.073” freebore.
3. If the 6-6.5x47 Lapua is half as good as everyone thinks it's going to be. Some day, after most of the bugs are worked out, maybe re-chamber for better long-range performance.
4. It’s easier to remove metal than put it back.

Should I go for a 9T, .080" freebore?

The barrel would be a Pac-Nor #7 straight taper, not cylinder. Should be about .88" at 27.

Any more further thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again, Richard

If mystic replies it would be a "Hat Trick";)

You could go nutless have it set up Remington Style which would allow a larger shank diameter.

However you loose the changability of the Savage.

I would say you don't want an overly heavy barrel on a Savage if you go long.

Too nose heavy and I don't think the Thread tenion set-up is the greatest for say a straight 1.25 pipe.

I would run the taper down to around .8 inches or so at the muzzle.

Also you didn't mention twist, but I would suggest the 1-8 twist as you'd be GTG with a wide range of bullets.

I don't think with a 6mmbr you'll be shooting 115's, but the 105's are doable.

You could go BRX, Dasher or 6x47 lapua as well.
