preferred powder and bullets for 22-250 1:8 twist heavy barrel Savage

A friend of mine has the Ackley version of this cartridge with a 1:8 twist Kreiger barrel and he uses IMR 4895 for his case forming loads. He also has very good results with H414/WW760. Another good powder is IMR 4064.

Quite a few years ago, I had a Savage Precision with a 1-8 Shilen barrel that loved the 80gr Bergers with H4350. Then 6BR fever set in.

The advantage of the 1/8 twist barrel is the ability to use heavier bullets. I load 80 gr burger bullets with Varget or Shooters World.

I'm running a 1in12 so I'm stuck with lighter bullets. I run either IMR 4064 or IMR 4895 under a 52gr SMK. 34.7gr of 4064 or 34.4gr if 4895.
A buddy has a 1in8 Savage and does really well with Varget under heavier bullets. Not sure how much or his choice of bullet.

Thanks for all the great info guys! I was posting this for a friend and want to help him set up his new Savage. I have SW4350 and Nosler 69CC and 70 RDF bullets on hand as well as 75 grain Hornady bullets. He tried Varget that he has on hand but did not get good results initially.

Anyone have suggestions for this setup? Thanks in advance for your help!
I got amazing results from 75gr Amaxes pushed by R15 to 3200fps. 3” five shot groups at 700 yards, and seemed to fight the wind far better than the numbers said it should.

I got tired of trimming cases every other loadings and re-barreled to a .22/250 AI. I didn’t waste my barrel fire forming brass; just loaded a good accurate .22/250 load an shot p/dogs with it. “Auto FF and results...”
My 1:8 TW loved 55 grain V-Max, Nosler Varmints, bulk “seconds” 55 gr BB/SP, 62 gr poly tips....usually with 35 gr of Varget. Then with it’s shortage, 35-38 hrs of Big Game. Best so far with the Nosler 55 gr is 645 yds...shot some 62 gr HPBT accurate but not “explosive” on p/dogs.

I shoot the Berger 85.5 gr and use Reloder 23 in my current 1:8 barrel. My first 22-250 barrel was a factory 12 twist and would only shoot up to 70 gr bullets. I could get away with those bullets because of my elevation (4500ft). I used a combination of faster burning powders in the first barrel. I only used heavier bullets in my first 1:8 barrel, 80grs and up. I used only Reloder 23 and my barrel lasted to 2000 rounds. Looking at barrel wear now versus new I should easily exceed 2000 rounds in this barrel.
