RL17 used with 22-250 AI

If you have a 1-14 barrel, you will be shooting 55 grs or LESS weight. The RL-17 is too slow for that weight bullet. I would be more inclined to go with a 50gr bullet (Ballistic Tips or BlitzKings) and a powder in the Varget arena.

Ackley in his "Handbook For Shooters and Reloaders" advised the use of 220 Swift data for the 22/250AI, as case capacities are very close. If you check the load data for the 220 Swift with 55 gr bullets on the Hodgdon website, you will find that H414/W760 and H380 velocities are the highest listed out doing Varget by almost 190 fps. I have used all three ball powders in the 22/250AI along with the similar AA2700 with excellent results. I have used R17 in the very slightly smaller 22X47L case, also with excellent results. The velocity difference between H380 and Varget is almost 180 fps with 50 gr bullets. I would certainly not count out R17 with 55 gr or even 50 gr bullets without testing. Good shooting! Vic

RL17 will most likely work well. It works in a very vast array of required burn rates. I get awesome speeds in cases that normally like RL25 or Retumbo then can turn around and get excellent performance in rounds with bullets that list loads in the H380 to IMR 4985 type of burn rate. Though traditionally thought by many folks to be in the 4350 burn rate area (works there too), RL17s range is much greater than the 4350 powders. Its effectiveness in all rounds great and small simply amazes me. Don't know how Alliant does it, but it's awesome. I always find excellent accuracy with it as well. Those who have extensive experience using it will know what I'm talking about.

QuickLoad's propellant analysis for the 22-250 AI and the Nosler Ballistic Tip puts RL-17 very near the top of the list. The optimal load is right at 100% of case capacity, and QuickLoad estimates muzzle velocity just short of 3,900 fps.

It may be a 10 year old thread but there is a lot of good info. in the 2 post.

1. Ackley in his "Handbook For Shooters and Reloaders" advised the use of 220 Swift data for the 22/250AI, as case capacities are very close.

2. The "Quick Loads Post" Those numbers are what you can safely get out of 220 swift.

The reason I mention this is because there are 2 nitwits on this site that say they are safely getting 4200 fps with a 55gr. bullet out of a 22/250AI. Then when you tell them, not with in safe operating pressures!!!! There response is you don't know what you are talking about. Then I put them on the ignore list many years ago and no more arguments!

If you shoot in varying temps RL17 is terrible for being temp stable, I left it along time ago for that very reason.
There better powders out there.

And, if you've never worked with RL17 before it sometimes seems like it has a mind of its own. My experience with it, once I learned its traits, has been mostly positive and it often does produce really good velocities but it is one of those sneaky powders that during load development will go along and won't really show any pressure so you keep adding just a little more to see where it's going to pressure out then it goes from little to no pressure signs to the next charge weight and you've all of a sudden got big pressure signs and a WTH I only increased it by 3 tenths from the last load that showed nothing moment. It's done that to me twice once in my 6.5-284 and the other in my 22-250. I switched to RL26 in my 6.5 but still use 17 in my 250.

I liken RL17 to dating a beautiful woman that's a little crazy. It'll lure you in with their good looks or in this case high velocities but you can't ever forget the part about it being a little crazy which can make it unpredictable too. ;)
